The Most Horrific EVP Ever Recorded

Central New York Ghost Hunters capture a terrifying scene from the past

By Stephen Wagner (http://paranormal.about.com/mbiopage.htm), About.com

IN JANUARY, 2007, the Central New York Ghost Hunters (http://www.gotghosts.org/) (CNYGH), based in Syracuse, New York, were invited to investigate an old hotel in upstate New York. (The owners of the hotel have asked to keep its location confidential.) The investigation proved to be one of the most intensely active the group has ever encountered, and produced an EVP – an electronic voice phenomena recording – that is remarkable not only for its length, but also for its terrifying content.

It may well be the most intense, frightening EVP ever recorded.

THE INVESTIGATION

On that weekend in January, CNYGH founder Stacey Jones and several members of the group went to the hotel on an overnight stay for what they thought would be a routine investigation. They had no idea what they were in for.

Originally built in the late 1800s, the building was in its colorful history the site of some nefarious activity, a fact that might be key to what is heard in the EVP.

On Friday night, Stacey and her group set up their equipment – audio recorders, video recorders and other electronics – and settled in, hoping to document some evidence for the haunting the owners had claimed. Most investigations are relatively quiet, but this night was filled with paranormal activity, including muffled voices of unknown origin, footsteps from unseen bodies and more. Members of the group I spoke with confirmed that it was the most active haunting they had personally experienced.

The real shocker came the next day. On Saturday afternoon at about 3 p.m., two female CNYGH investigators and a member of the owner's family (also a female) sat on the staircase of the hotel with a digital voice recorder, intending to capture some EVP. They chose the stairway because they had heard soft conversations and footsteps on the floor above, although no one was up there.

When they later played the recording back, however, what they heard were not soft voices and footsteps, but something totally unexpected and completely terrifying.

THE EVP: WHAT YOU'LL HEAR

Stacey Jones describes what you'll hear on the recording:

"You can [faintly] hear the three females talking throughout the recording. You will hear a female – the family member – say, 'Hello, baby,' and another long conversation. Those are all human voices. But what sounds like a struggle or attack is going on as well.

"The male [voice] you hear was not present at the hotel. You will hear a cuckoo clock (which was not present) a ticking of a hall clock (which was there); you will hear what sounds like the microphone being moved (which was not touched) and then the sound becomes clearer.

"You will hear a creaking door and slamming of the door, which is real. Then you will hear a [unknown] woman say, 'Get off me,' and what sounds like the woman being attacked. The struggle continues for awhile, and during the EVP you can hear some of my investigators' conversations. After interviewing my investigators, they said they went and sat on the stairs of this hotel, because they heard from an above floor, what sounded like footsteps and conversations, not what you hear on this recording. When the noises stop, you hear the investigators participate in a lulled conversation. They stated that they started to talk when the noises stopped. In their conversation, you will hear a male voice say, 'Help me' several times."

Caution: the recording is violent and may be too intense for some listeners.

It's a large file, so the download may take awhile. If you're having trouble downloading the file, try right-clicking the link above and choose "Save Target As..." in Internet Explorer or "Save Link As..." in Firefox to save the file to your computer's hard drive, then play it from there.

If you still have trouble, try listening to it from YouTube:

YouTube version (http://paranormal.about.com/od/ghostaudiovideo/youtube/yt_horrific_evp.htm)

"The EVP has not been altered in any way, except it was edited for time," Stacey says. "CNY Ghost Hunters have tried to reduce the noise, amplify and 'clean' it up, but found it difficult to make out exactly what was being said. We invite you to download this EVP to see what you can make of it.

"Please let me know what you make of this EVP. I can't give you any more of the history as we are no longer able to enter the hotel where the EVP was obtained. If you can make out any further detail, please drop Stephen an email (paranormal@about.com) or contact Central New York Ghost Hunters at: Stacey@gotghosts.org"

Central New York Ghost Hunters (of which I am a member) is one of the oldest paranormal investigation groups in the state.

Same here for me as well. Have you and IG experimented with EVPs?

I would record the sound file Biker and put it up, however I don't have any recording software on my PC anymore....hopefully someone else here can grab it and put the file up for you and others who are not able to stream the video...it's really just an audio file in video format.

If not, I'll see what if any freeware I can find and try to do it myself. I know that I was given several recommendations in another thread...I just haven't had the time to fool with it yet.

'Preciate it, Miss Alpha, but our old dial-up just ain't up to the task.

I've messed around some with EVP but I've had no success. I did correspond with Barbara McBeath from the GIS for awhile and she gave me some tips.

Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Sometime if life finds me in Idaho, we'll have to try some night recording at some old cemeteries and known places of interest. It can be time consuming and tedious work, but sometimes when you're panning for gold you get a nugget.

I had an excellent EVP recorded here in the building my office is in, a 100+ year old science lab building at the U of U. I'd got video of an orb in a classroom and, attached to it, was an EVP, the clearest EVP I had ever heard. It went:

"Ah, I'm, uh, looking for something...DEAR GOD! GO GET KURT!"

The video and EVP were the talk of the campus for many nights, as I shared this phone camera video with the police and security guards who have this building on their beats. Unfortunately, the entire phone, with the SD card containing the video mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter. It was like, almost, "Uh, sorry 'Cat. This evidence is too compelling and convincing and will convert many a skeptic so you may not have it!", from the universe.

But I've gotten to know a ghost very well since I've been doing graveyards here, and I'll soon post my story about "Boo", as I called him, who was haunting a former LDS chapel when I came on nights (he's since gone to the light as his lady friend for whom he was waiting finally came over).

So much to catch y'all up on, actually. I'll have to post the dream (OBE?) I had a year ago Thanksgiving, in which George Harrison invited me to go on a walk with him for a bit and showed and explained to me many things. including God himeslf who appeared to me as a comatose Rhesus monkey (what could be less fearsome and terrifying, he explained to me, than a comatose monkey?), and introduced to me a few fellow musicians he's been spending time with there (but no Lennon! As George told me, John was reincarnated and doing very well in a very hard life. Also, he assured me that the missing Richey James Edwards of Manic Street Preachers was NOT on his side of the veil, but some mysteries may not be explained yet).

I'll be posting more soon!

N-Cat. Welcome to the club. Get some good recording equipment and keep trying, and asking questions to identify the deceased.

One bit of advice. When dealing with people that like to keep this stuff out of view, I always keep mum about my results, make some copies, and then share only the copy. The original should be squirreled away in a place know and accessed only by you.

It became very obvious to me that about 99% of the population are intimidated by the thought that the dead could answer back. And I would suggest about 2% have reason to be very concerned that the dead could tell some stories.

Keep up the research.

Low bitrate recording for slow service.

You've got me thinking Alpha. I've been having a lot of shadows passing behind me. I bought a pair of cheap eye glasses from Hakim this go around. Hey $199 for 2 pairs of nice Italian frames. Great deal but the coatings were extra. It kind of was a blessing. If the reflections I'm seeing behind me are of me moving my head why wouldn't I see them all the time and only when my head is still(reading at the computer and doing the dishes). I feel a presence here. Feeding off my energy. It feels like a woman figure. A mother or grandmother. I lost my grandmother recently. We weren't close but I was her first grandson. It could be her. I set up my Sony recorder to record at a set audio level so I don't have to listen for hours to find a peep. I'll post it later. By the way I bought this recorder for that reason. It's very sensitive and there is no cable needed. It plugs directly via usb. I'll see what I get.

Sounds strange I know but it's possible that as we crossing through the veil of time and space traveling through the galactic plain, the dimensional veil is thinning. They are seeing and hearing us more clearly as well. It's a time of great change. Don't listen to what you hear on television. It's a program for your mind. I haven't owned a tv in over 2 years and it has opened my mind. I can think again. It's like breaking the addiction of nicotine. Turning off the tv was like disconnecting from the programing. Woh, where am I going with this. I digress.

Two tools that are invaluable in cleaning recordings of EVPs are a good EQ (equalizer) and a heavy duty DSP noise reduction. I use the Sony NR which allows you to capture the room noise, and subtract that from the recording allowing for anything residual to be heard.

The thing that I have found is that EVP capture, like recording two people talking, seems to depend on how close the "guest" is to the microphone. If you have ever tried recording someone from across a room, you can understand how the clarity comes into play. You need NR to pull out a lot of voices and make them audible. If using Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) software, you need Isotope RX (http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx) to really pull out the clarity.

Keep in mind, not all spirits will come up to your recording device. :)

BE, I have found that if they understand the concept of recording you get more cooperation.

I guess the best way to think of it is to imagine going back in time and handing someone an iPod. They wouldn't know what to do with it.

The spirits that have experienced recording or know about it seem to be the ones that will be more cooperative. Spirits from the mid 1900s seem to know what a microphone is. This is one reason I use a microphone on a desk stand connected to the recorder, rather than the microphone embedded into the recorder. I think they know that the microphone is the device that picks them up. The spirits who have never witnessed a microphone can't grasp the concept of talking toward it.

I've been recording for a couple of hours and I haven't heard the slightest peep to try to clarify. VO that software you posted is way over my price range. Can we send you the audio and have you take it farther?

This works pretty well to remove noise in audacity http://www.podtopia.net/gettingstarted/removenoise.shtml (free, built in) no, it is not as good probably, but definitely ok if you sample proper noise.

Always good to get the tips from the source: http://www.audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Noise_Removal - other good stuff at http://www.audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Tips

Did a listen with my headphones and messed with the eq a little on the (SRS) software that comes with freeware. Nightmares for sure tonight! We feel drafts in warm rooms all the time when we go on sick calls and the people we go to pray with pass on. Strange stuff. Might invest in a small recording device like the one you have there blackeyes. I'll attach a mike like you say though.

Thanks for the great links everyone. :)

I had no clue this was there. Any limits on the size or format of the file?

BE: I would have to work off the original WAV if anything. Most sound NR will not work on MP3s as the compression algorithm will fight with the NR, and you get sort of a tone sequence as the software tries to make sense of the changes in audio.

BTW, a way to do EVPs live is via an extended mic. It's only about 10% as good as recording but here's how it's done. Use a good quality dynamic microphone, and make up a long cable. It HAS to be good quality microphone cable, (2-conductor with double mesh shield), running to your recorder. Turn up the mic as loud as you can while listening via headphones.

Warning: If you do this at home, and your dog is in the room with the mic and barks, while it shouldn't hurt the equipment, you may have to clean out your pants! :)

On my Sony Scoopman a normal conversation in a room is typically 72 dB, but on the headphones it could be approaching 110-120 dB if I crank up the volume. This will cause hearing damage. A barking dog could be like standing next to someone firing a 357. So you HAVE to be careful when doing this.

I've only had minor success, so don't expect miracles.

What I use typically is an Audio Technica AT2020 microphone, connected to a Sony MZ-M200 minidisc recorder. The mic has to be at least 10 feet from the recorder to keep from picking up the transport (mechanics of the recorder).

While I have not done it, my friend in Dayton has had luck with the Zoom H2 (http://www.minidisco.com/Zoom-H2) recorder. He got a voice at the air museum saying, "your welcome", after he commented that he thought some of the aviators in WW-II gave it there all to win the war.

Some answers about the dropbox here VO http://imaginativeworlds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11561

It is a super cool service.. We only have 1GB total, so keep files as small as possible, crop them down to the actual sound in question and compress to mp3... should never be over a MB unless the clip is really long.

Everything dropped into the box gets announced on the forum automatically each night by rssposter.
