TREE-TAPPING STARTS IN PREPARATION FOR PUBLIC SUGARING DAYS
Sweet, it is: Toledo-area events offer flavor of maple syrup

MONROE — As seasons change, the cycle of sweetness pumps up interest in fresh-from-the-tree maple syrup.

In the coming days, residents from across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan can tour sugar camps, participate in hands-on maple activities, and savor the syrup’s just-made flavor.

It’s been an up-and-down season, akin to the three bears’ porridge: It was too hot, too cold, and now, it’s just about right.

“The sap is running,” said Lynn Reaume, who tapped trees on the Monroe County Historical Museums’ property this week. She is secretary in charge of education, and is gathering sap to prepare for Maple Sugar Day at the Navarre- Anderson Trading Post in Monroe next weekend.

“The sap had not been running that much, but these days, it is up to 40 during the day and then down close to freezing at night,” she said yesterday. And that’s what it takes. “This week has been fine, and the weather report for next week should be good.”
