I know that Rosalee can't eat chocolate...can you imagine a life without chocolate????? But, what about potatoes? And, sweet potatoes...yams...or whatever you Yanks call them. :silly: Does anyone know if dogs should eat potatoes?
Is there anything else we should keep them away from?

Delphs, all my dogs have eaten chocolate.
My Katie...a Springer Spaniel when my boys were young used to steal all the chocolate she could....Easter Egg hunt time, Christmas etc.
She once stole an entire chocolate cake from the table and ate the whole thing....not to mention all the entire large Toblerone bars she stole and ate...wrappers and all.
Chi and I often have a snack of chocolate in bed....one bite for her, one bite for me....chocolate, chocolate cake, icecream or whatever.
Maybe all this stuff isn't good for them ideally...and I"m sure it's not.
However dogs when homeless, will eat anything they can find and they seem to be fine.
I'm sure any potato, rice, pasta, veggies, fruit is all more than o.k.
I cook all meat for my dog at home...I get the last day for sale stuff ...chicken, beef, pork, liver...whatever I can find and do it up. One can add wheat germ, fennel seed or any good stuff....even older bread. It takes a lot more effort, however, it's a hell of a lot better than anyone will ever buy or can buy in commercial pet food, not matter how premium it is.
I think what is more harmful to our dogs and cats are all the yearly vaccines they make us think we have to give them and all the other pet pharma stuff for heartworm, fleas etc.
After Chi was 5 years old, I stopped taking her for her vaccines. I knew she had enough immunity and didn't need any more, but not according to the "rules" and I was very afraid that if she ever got into an altercation with another dog or human, that I would be in huge trouble, however I did it anyway.
This year, she developed a lump on her hip and I had to take her to a vet, and of course had to subject her to vaccine updates.
Well don't you know, right where she got the vaccine shot, she has developed a lump the size of a large golf ball....she is 10 years old...damn it...I wish I would have never done that.
Big Pharma isn't just there for us...it's alive and well for our pets too...as is a ton of disinfo about what they can or cannot eat..
JMHO of course.

Potatoes are fine. Bessie loves 'em french fried, mashed, potato chips! I've read that onions and garlic can be poison for dogs. Grapes and raisins can be hard on their kidneys.
Just keep a close eye on how your reacts to foods.... diarrhea, constipation. Like any one a dog can have a food allergy.
Thanks Alpha for your advice :yup:

Yea, I've seen through the BS about what to feed your dog too.
I cook one meal a day for my dog, and I have the Whole Foods kibble laying around if she wants it, she doesn't.
I had a pesto olive oil pasta slide off my plate and she loved it, so I make her a plate of pasta when ever I make some for myself.
Potatoes are fine as a filler.
I got my dog's shots cause I was afrad not to have up to date tags when we are at the park and stuff.
Man,,,I should have thought that one through.

I almost lost my little dog to Xylitol about a month ago. I had made oatmeal, and used a teaspoon of Xylitol to sweeten it. The phone rang, and I got distracted. I turned back around to the table, and saw my little dog standing on my chair, front feet on the table, lapping up the last of my bowl of oatmeal. I didn't think anything of it, other than to scold him for doing what he had done. Within 30 minutes, he was shaking like a leaf and whimpering. In panic mode, it popped into my brain that I'd read something about Xylitol and dogs. I quickly looked it up on the net, and sure enough, it said that Xylitol can kill dogs very quickly. It drops their blood sugar rapidly down to nothing, and they go into a coma and die. My dog was failing rapidly. There was absolutely NO time to even think about a vet, so I did the only thing I could think of... Being hypoglycemic myself, I knew he needed sugar -- and fast! I took about three tablespoons of real sugar, mixed it with warm water and took a 1 cc syringe and began dribbling the liquid into his mouth, rubbing his neck to get him to swallow as much as possible. Within minutes he started to recover as his blood sugar began to rise back up. If I hadn't witnessed that whole thing, I don't think I would have believed such a thing was possible! Anyway, ten minutes later and he was fine and fit. Oh... there was one side effect though! He was on a 'sugar high' for about half an hour, and was running around the house like crazy, barking and pestering me to play 'throw Muffy'. I would have played with him all day if he had wanted, as I was just to happy to see him alive and well. Thank goodness I didn't try to get him to a vet. I know now he wouldn't have lived long enough for me to even get him into the car!

Sage loves anything starchy. Potatoes, popcorn, noodles, whatever. Hasn't done her any harm.

Xylitol is the sweetener Delphine. It can be found in some gums, and candy and other foods. You'd have to read labels to find it. It's a natural sweetener, made from birch trees (somehow), and is used as a sugar substitute.

Oh....up here in Alaska we produce birch syrup like Vermont produces maple syrup. Not as big an operation of course. But birch syrup is yummy!
