It's way too early for Alaskans to start the seeds for even patio gardening...but I'm getting impatient and I like to plan ahead.
Sure there are dozens of sites on the 'Net that give tips and hints and even directions for growing veggies in pots placed on the patio or deck or even inside the apartment.
But I'd like to pick your brains here. Anybody here successfully growing veggies in pots?
There are already some hooks hanging over the front patio, anybody here have success with those "Upside Down" planters?
Thanks!

upside down planters i have tried were great(also very pretty)...strawberries and tomatoes were the ones i tried, i have had great patio gardens growing in pots...does your son work in a restaurant? 5 gallon food containers are perfect for squash, tomatoes, bell peppers...just about every thing that grows....just poke holes in the bottom...i didnt have much luck with smaller planters tho...seems the 5 gallon size is good

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! I am doing the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!! I am lining up all the seeds (so-to-speak) and mentally designing my garden. Last year my garden was all in pots and they did very well (I might add!). This year I have a "raised" garden. Different and a lot of fun too. I couldn't part with some of the potted plants though. My bulbs are all coming out now and making absolutely beautiful bouquets. I live in Central Ca. I have never been to Alaska, but I am sure you have special plants that can grow up there too. My carrots are still coming in (from last year) and I juice them up every chance I get. This year, a friend gave me a zillion seeds! LOL - unmarked with no names!! Wish me luck!! Verna Lee

Thanks, and WELCOME to IW Verna Lee!
That's a great suggestion Pyrite. James works at a Hotel, in Room Service, which means he also has access to the kitchen, I'll ask him about those 5 gallon buckets :yup:
I have a whole lot of Heritage Non-Hybrid seeds, a wide variety, some for warm climes and some for colder climes.
The Rule of Thumb for planting in Anchorage is the last weekend in May, or when the leaves on the Birch Trees are the size of mouses ears! Gardeners usually start the seeds indoors around about the end of March. But like I said I'm getting antsy....so I'll start the planning stage now :biglaugh:
My son told me there are some strips of ground, around the condo building, where nobody plants anything, so I think I'll plant the carrots and radishes there.

Yup Verna Lee I love fresh carrot juice. I like to add some apple and a bit of ginger.

hmmm I gotta get a juicer!

I shared this link at another, related Thread, but I'll put it here too http://www.survivalseedbank.com/ This is where I bought my seeds last year. To read the web site they make it sound like they could run out any time.....but it doesn't hurt to give them a try.

In my tube of seeds....each kind comes in individual packets with pictures.....is a good variety from warm weather to moderate weather to cold weather seeds.

At the end of the season last year I bought a couple of Topsy Turvey Upside Down Tomato and Herb Planters (as seen on TV!). Now I'm wondering what got into me to do this. Well, they were a bargain--cheap! Really cheap. I suppose I should try to grow something in them.

I need any tips anyone is willing to give. Do you suppose I will get those huge ugly horned tomato worms? My ex-hubbicans put tomato worm poisoning up in the garage rafters for storage I guess and it took forever to figure out whether somebody died up there or what. :biggrinjester: Whew! :yuck: Sulphur stink, maybe.
