If the old hard drive is a typical modern EIDE drive just configure it with the jumper for slave and the new one as master and connect them on one EIDE channel with a good quality 80pin EIDE cable. I use a second drive for temporary storage and also for backups of the primary drive with a program like Ghost.
I rarely get a whole new computer, I just upgrade pieces of my computer over time. The biggest upgrade recently I did was a whole new motherboard/CPU/RAM combination plus a new DVD-RW burner drive and a new bigger power supply. I kept the old case and AGP video card/capture card though!

If you want some technical info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIDE
just configure it with the jumper for slave and the new one as masterJust FYI, this is sometimes harder than it at first seems... I have had some fun nights trying to get M/S drive combos working properly.
