View Full Version : ScanDisk Question

Wanting to transfer my photos from camera to computer, I took my 512 mb ScanDisk card out of the camera and installed it into the computer receptacle. I took for granted that in Windows Explorer, I would find which "drive" I would find it and take it from there. But it did not appear.

The question is: Does this mean that the receptacle connection does not work?

What I did...

I put the card into my HP printer and it transferred the pics for me (through the proprietary program that came with the camera).

At work, I transferred the pics by putting the camera on its cradle and connected it to the computer by a little connector wire. Once I did that, then the MS camera wizard came up and totally surprised me with its efficiency. So now I have the pics on the machines at home and at work (at work because it's easier to email from here...which brings me to the "re-sizing question in another thread...)

Thanks for your help

First off, it is a SanDisk most likely, ScanDisk is a program in windows to fix drive errors.

You may in fact need to install a driver in order for it to work on XP. I am unsure what kind of receptacle you speak of, did you buy a card reader? It is uncommon for a computer to come with a built-in card reader. Can you give more specifics on where this receptacle is located?

It is OK to use the printer if it contains a card reader... essentially this is the same as the card reader you would buy separately.

Sorry, it is SanDisk and it's the card that the pics are stored on in the camera.

The receptacle is located in the bottom front of the computer. If I remember correctly, it was called a 4-in-one and will take all sorts of plug-ins and/or cards... yes I had to buy it extra.

The printer is an HP Photosmart and has a card reader too. But when I put the card into the card reader in the computer, there was no acknowledgement visually through Windows Explorer that there was a card in any drive.

So I'm wondering if I did not do it the right way. I remember using someone's card one other time (just to try it out) and when I put it into the card reader, I must have been able to tell exactly which drive the card was in because I was able to transfer some photos to my computer. This time I wasn't able to.

I took for granted that when I would plug the card into the reader, I would see on which drive it was in, highlite the drive and the files would show up. I would then be able to transfer the files to a directory on the C drive where my pics are stored. This did not happen because I was unable to find where the card was...

Possibilities:

1. The reader does work, but is not popping up the window
2. The reader does not work

So... chuck the card back in the reader. Even if a window does not pop up, you should have a new icon appear next to the clock, a green thing, that says 'Safely remove hardware' when you hover mouse over it. If this does not show up, the reader is not installed properly. In this case, check all cables first. Second, go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and see if anything has a little yellow exclamation point next to it. If something does, right-click it and choose uninstall, then immediately reboot. It should prompt you for drivers after reboot.

If the green thing shows up but no window opens. go to Window Explorer and see if there is a new drive added (D: or higher). If there is, click in it to see if your pix are there.

Try opening Camera and Scanner wizard manually (Start>Accessories>S+C Wizard).

However, if the printer one works, just use that one unless you feel like fooling around with it.

I just want to mention that waiting for windows to acknowledge something is a bad habit. Windows is selective about when they pop up a message. They do it all too often to tell you something you don't need to know, and are shaky when it comes to telling you stuff you do need to know.

You do know you should not just pull memory cards out of a computer right? :) You need to first tell XP you are finished using it.

Uh... no, I didn't know. I had a merry time putting it in and taking it out. And where in @#$ do I find the menu to let XP know anything if it hasn't told me it knows anything

Don't assume it will tell you anything. The way to know if the card is recognized is by following the steps I outlined.

This is not a user-friendly system you are dealing with, you have to control the computer, not vice-versa. :tired:

And where in @#$ do I find the menu to let XP know anything if it hasn't told me it knows anything^Textbook windows support question hehe :)

and as for the taking out the memory card, you could theoretically screw the card taking it out before windows is ready, and I have crashed XP so many times doing this... This applies to USB as well, never unplug a USB device without using the 'Safely remove hardware' crap in your taskbar (the green arrow thing).

Gee Project, I really appreciate the help you're giving me.

So to check whether the card is reading, should I plug the card back into the reader (at home tonight) and see if a little green thingy appears?

If it doesn't appear, should I assume that the reader doesn't work?...and in that case just take the card out? Is there any "safe" way of checking whether a reader is working without frying the card? (they're expensive little suckers..)

OR

Should I just not use the computer to plug the card in, use the camera, cradle and or printer to transfer pics and forget about the computer card reader?

reread my posts for how to see if your reader is working properly.. but yes, use your printer!
