Thanks for posting that "Rule of Thirds". I've never seen that before. I shoot mostly audio and video, (someday I'll have to share the EVP stuff), but I do have a Canon Rebel EOS-G with a variety of lens. Most of the stuff I shoot is just things my son and I do. This weekend we'll be up at the air show in Toledo, OH shooting pictures of airplanes.

I wish I could score some shots like you folks have posted. They are incredible!

Ones like the double rainbow are one in a lifetime, so just make sure to always have a cam with you. All mine are just snaps, no more than 2-3 seconds spent deciding shot.

If you have a dig cam, just shoot all the time, and sort the best out when you get home.

Project, I wish you would stop posting these. You're going to force me to get my camera out again. :D

BTW, Project, most people I know are switching to digital systems. Are there still photographers that have their own home dark rooms, and shooting in film?

Project
09-08-2007, 11:03 AM
Sure lots of people shoot film, but they are either crazy or pros, or both :)

I would shoot film only in medium format at this point.

Of course, some people cannot afford to step up to digital yet, or just prefer negs for some reason, or already own the gear (I have a full pro 35mm pentax kit with 2 bodies, 12 lenses... have not used it in 3 years).

Some will claim there are things they can do with film you can't with digital imaging... I say they have not met the right digital imager.

Very soon we will see video cameras with good enough frame by frame quality to pull one of those off for a picture. So, you will constantly shoot 30 frames per second, and any of those frames can be chosen for an enlargement. Already my cam shoots about 5 frames per sec on it's highest image quality, so I can just hold the trigger and move to follow action, you are almost guaranteed to get a good shot, as long as you know how to configure your camera (which is unbelievably complex, and I have been doing this a while. I am always finding settings that I should have known about, etc...).

Fantastic shot. Talk about timing. Did you plan to have the church steeple where it appeared in the shot?

sure, I took a bunch (maybe 30) shots, from different angles as the sun kept going in and out of the clouds. At least half were crap (over/under exposed), half of remaining had people's heads or cars in them, another half were bad angles. I picked the 'best' of those and applied a

High_dynamic_range_imaging

effect to it, which I overdid and you can see the color distortion in the lower part of the image (which is underexposed). Still learning by making mistakes as always.

Attached is one I like for some reason, found on beautiful hiking trail on Grand Manan Island... hmm hope I have not already posted this somewhere lol... (crappy flickr gives me this as largest size)

Well, I was playing World of Warcraft and interacting with a good friend of mine from Second Life when I noticed this fog outside.
It looked kind of weird so I went to the window and looked out.
It wasn't fog.
It was smoke!
I grabbed my camera, prayed that the battery was charged and ran outside.
This was what I saw:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/captkundalini/2624795032/sizes/l/in/photostream/

That explained the approaching sirens. By the time i got across the street, 10 seconds at most, the chimney of the neighbors house was fully engulfed.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/captkundalini/2623968959/sizes/l/

Fortunately, KFD knocked it down in no time. Most of the damage was to the exterior, with smoke and water damage done on the inside.
They knocked the remains of the chimney down but I wasn't able to get that because the batteries finally bit the big one.

Here is a picture of my desk around 1999. I took this snapshot with a Polaroid Land Camera (70's vintage, plastic "Square Shooter"). Using the "Cold Clip", I developed the shot in my armpit for 90 seconds - AS THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAMERA SUGGESTED!! I love that technology. In many ways it is much more functional than digital. In many ways it also blows, but I love it all the same.

And I absolutely love the picture of the Monkey Puzzle tree!!! I've been fascinated by those trees since I saw my first one as a very young child.

Now as for that desk... do you think you could get anymore books on it? :lmao: Love the shadow of the old reel-to-reel projector!

SquidInk

I'm not sure what type of insect those are. I saw them fighting (or fornicating, or both) & when the dust settled this poor slob needed a stiff drink, and a new wing. I tend to think insects do not "feel pain", but who knows?

I rented a 8x10 space for eight years. Somehow, my whole life fit in there. I took that shot while standing on my fold up army cot, because there was virtually no floor space! Eventually my reading habit overwhelmed that place.

That shadow you see is an 8mm camera. If the film was wound one way, it shot footage. Then, develop the film, wind it through the same camera a different way, set the whole mess on a powered base & mount it on the tri-pod, and voila - a projector!

Being spring, it's breeding time for the peacocks. Here's a photo of 'Butthole' who has taken up residence in front of the warehouse. He chases cars out of his display area too!!

And here is what a peacock looks like from the side with his tail up. There is a whole set of heavy long feathers that hold the tail straight up.

Yeah, those talons would be nothing to mess with! I had to hunt for a non-metal mirror for Mr. Butthole, as he was attacking his image in my small truck and scratching the paint. I hung it on a post, and he attacks the mirror so intensely at times, there will be spots of blood on it. No, he doesn't really hurt himself though. He can be a real pain when someone comes though, as he goes after any car he can see his reflection in!! I had company recently, and he nailed the back bumper of their car when we were in the house!

No VO. Peacocks are not like a rooster. But if they sense something moving down below them when they are fifty feet up in the trees, they will call out. And so VO, they are very 'high-tech' burglar alarms, that can't be affected by power outages, or creeps creeping up the hill, or... They aren't for city people however. City people go 'Eeewuu' when it comes to anything that doesn't fit in the little city box! :wink1:

Interesting. I wonder if they would survive in Upper Michigan. The reason I ask is that a friend lived across from The Toledo Zoo, and he would comment about "the damn peacocks" at the zoo waking him up in the morning. Which now makes me wonder what they were alarmed about in the morning before the crowds come in.

I don't think they'd survive in Upper Michigan without shelter. Here, they don't need shelter; they just sleep about 50 feet up in the fir trees all year.

Here's another picture showing the large, strong support feathers that hold up their beautiful display feathers. They really are amazing birds. Sounds like your friend isn't into nature! :tounge-in-cheek:

Well, you know, Judee, in India they are in the wild, so you can imagine how scruffy they can get. But they are in the perfect weather environment, so when kept in enclosed parklands and well fed, they are spectacular. I remember that they liked to fan their tails when the weather was overcast and slightly rainy. Do you find the same with yours?

That's interesting snowbird. During breeding season, (which is now), they fan whenever they see a female close by. The trick is to try to entice her into their display territory. But truthfully, if it rains, the males head for cover. I have an albino male that has 'trained' me to feed him. His territory is about fifteen feet from the back door. He will go to the patio gate and stand there and softly call, and I will throw out dog kibble for him. He does have more of a motive other than food however. He learned that if he begs for kibble, a lot of hens have a tendency to hang around him. I looked outside yesterday, and the albino male had a large group of hens around him, and all the other blue males were displaying in futility! Of course, no other males are ever allowed into another male's display territory. He's one smart bird! :laugh2:

Sometime I'll have to take some more general "town" pictures, including the abandoned bank. We have a bank that was the hub of the town. It's a 1920 granite bldg, and it operated through the depression, and to the 60s. Then the bank was closed and the building just sat empty all these years. I love architecture, and took a tour of the building photographing the oak staircases, acid etched glass doors, etc. On the 7th floor there was a dental office, and in it a complete office, abandoned, including the dentists chairs and spit sinks.

Triffids! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_of_the_Triffids) Don't let the bird eat them!

Fungi is well known to be very different to any other form of life on earth. Fungi form the fifth Kingdom of life on earth, being neither plant, animal, microbes or protozoa. Fungal spores are incredibly resilient to extreme conditions of temperature and radiation, and have been recorded to thrive in space. For example, certain types of fungi have become problematic in the Mir Space Station, growing in air-conditioning units and corroding materials. These facts lead to the possibility that fungus may have an extraterrestrial origin, possibly being transmitted to Earth via spores in an asteroid or comet.

Many types of fungi have profound mind-altering effects when consumed by humans. Hallucinogenic Fungi produces radically different perceptual brain states in humans via a process that is not fully understood. It only takes a miniscule quantity of these fungal molecules to enter the bloodstream, and the human brain is somehow ‘de-tuned’ from every-day reality, instead focusing on an alternate perception of the universe.

Hallucinogenic Fungi is worshipped by many shamanic tribes across the earth. It has been postulated that our pre-literate ancestors once worshipped ‘the divine mushroom’, and that hallucinogenic fungi was instrumental in developing human intelligence, specifically language. Many shamanic religions treat their fungi as an intelligence that can be interacted with via the hallucinogenic state. For example the Bwiti tribe in Gabon believe that iboga is a ‘super-concious spiritual entity that guides mankind’.

Some fungi is know to produce states where we can directly communicate with seemingly alien intelligences (for example the ‘self-transforming machine elves’ associated with DMT). Terence McKenna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_McKenna) has proposed that hallucinogenic fungi may be an alien technology, “seeded” on Earth by non-human intelligence, as part of a “biological communication strategy”, in order to alter the perceptive processes of the human mind so that it may receive messages being transmitted to us. It is also conceivable that fungi is in itself intelligent, meaning that ETIs are living among us undetected right now. - source (http://poweroftheunknown.wordpress.com/2006/04/03/top-10-evidence-for-extraterrestrial-intelligence/)

Hey Judee,

The first picture is nasturtium in the yard, the second and third are plants I 'shot' at a botanical garden. I don't know what they are. One is an aloe, and the other was in a very humid greenhouse (picture below). I took around three hundred photos there, but most are kind of plain unless plant structures interest you!

I may be wrong, but I believe the third picture is a member of the salvia family. And they do indeed love and thrive on humidity. I have some in a terrarium, and it grows so abundantly I have to constantly thin it out. Actually I have more than one type of salvia...

shades of Damnation Alley7967

Damnation Alley is the title of a 1967 science fiction short story by Roger Zelazny, which he expanded into a novel in 1969. A film adaptation of the novel was released in 1977.
Plot introduction

Both the short story and the novel open in a post-apocalyptic Southern California, in a hellish world shattered by nuclear war decades before. Several surviving police states have emerged in place of the former United States. Hurricane-force winds above five hundred feet prevent any sort of air travel from one state to the next, and sudden, violent, and unpredictable storms make day-to-day life a mini-hell. Hell Tanner, an imprisoned killer, is offered a full pardon in exchange for taking on a suicide mission - a drive through "Damnation Alley" across a ruined America from Los Angeles to Boston — as one of three vehicles attempting to deliver urgently needed plague vaccine.

Hey thanks. The others looked a little better originally ( I am still experimenting with EXIF removal techniques...the one I used on those distorted the image a little). Maybe I can turn off the EXIF at the camera - why did I not of that before? Sheeh -

And you know, spring in Quebec is a little different than spring in Southern California - isn't it? LOL - very beautiful place!

You probably can't turn it off on camera... why do you want to scrub it anyways?

I think our best is 13 geocaches in a day, but that was on a road trip, stopping for little hikes every hour or so... However, I am NOT a numbers guy in that game, I think I have 270 found, since 2005 lol. I must be one of the lowest per day cachers out there. I use it to get me outside and on a nice walk, usually I plan one single one on each hike.

Nope this was one of those rare ones where the clouds were right in the right place to cause refraction. It was neon pink, and dark blue, it is hard for a photo to reproduce of course. I stopped on the side of a small highway and hiked into a farmer's field for a ton of shots of it.

Awesome Squid...thanks for sharing :)

The first shot really strikes me...where was that taken? What is the old Mojave Road?

The Mojave Road was the original trail (used by Mojave Natives) between the Colorado River (Arizona Border) and the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. It winds through an enormous expanse of desert landscape, like that seen in the photos. It's a huge place. Most people don't realize how much of California is desert like that.

But it's not a sterile environment by any means - just dry. The Mojave Road linked several wells and oasis's across the desert, they generally occur at roughly 60 mile intervals. The railroad exploited these in the days of the steam locomotive, and consequently there are a few ghost towns along the road.

Much of the road is sand, although I stayed on the paved portion due to the fact I had a vehicle with me.

The shot you asked about is (roughly) here: LINK TO MAP (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cima+raod+joshua+tree&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=47.483365,93.076172&ie=UTF8&hq=cima+raod&hnear=Joshua+Tree,+San+Bernardino,+California&ll=35.261179,-115.549049&spn=0,0.247192&z=13&layer=c&cbll=35.262567,-115.516891&panoid=L7r7pPHzjFLslsbhW9i08w&cbp=12,17.59,,0,0.08) - zoom out for proximity to other stuff.

I decided to move from photos and try my hand at video and audio. Here are a few practice results on my first attempt recording outside on Saturday.

FIRST VIDEO (https://rapidshare.com/files/1043526227/MVI_4579-ipad.mp4) 61.37 MB 1m 22s

First brief video while out on a hike using my new camera (well almost new, got it last December but haven't played with the video much until now). Please excuse my grunts and the occasional equipment adjustment being made, ha. Hey, I was just playing, practicing, getting a feel for how all this works together, testing this and that, trying to see what works and what doesn't.

I'm recording the video using a Canon 7D DSLR and the audio with a Zoom H4n audio recorder. I'm using a wide angle lens (10mm - 16mm on the 7D). I've learned a number of things during this hike the other day, such as a wind sock over the mic is not enough when in the open like this. I can easily fix this with a couple of nylon screens attached to protect the mics and I can make those. I had the mic gain set pretty high too, you can hear a train and a turkey once in a while, ha, and other noise one might expect outside a large city. There are wild turkeys all over the place around here. I will need to create consistent audio/level if I intend to eventually paste scenes together. I will need to watch out for undesired background noises too, such as aircraft and even the wind.

SECOND VIDEO (https://rapidshare.com/files/4062735977/MVI_4586-ipad.mp4) 126.73 MB 2m 49s

I stopped for a smoke, lol. I blew some of that happy stuff at the trees and they started to react. ;) I like it out here, nobody ever bothers me way out here, few people ever wander back this far. I think I had the mic gain turned all the way up on this one. You can hear them turkeys. I tracked one down a little later and got some video, but it was a smaller one. I was able to get about 50 feet from it before it dashed into the bushes.

THIRD VIDEO (https://rapidshare.com/files/721645283/MVI_4632-ipad.mp4) 61.92 MB 1m 22s

Pretty trees, pretty birds. Just behind those white leaved trees is a road. If I rose the camera up about a foot you might see the top of an occasional car driving by. Lots of people walking by on that road behind and below those trees too. Nobody ever comes up here much. Excuse the mic handling noise near the end, normally I wouldn't touch the mic while recording, leaving it in a fixed location while moving about with the camera, but hey, I was just playing .. and learning.

Anyhow, thought I'd stop by and say hey and share these few brief windows to yesterday on Earth. I'm going to work on getting a lot of good video and audio of Earth before the doom comes in November .. you know .. something to remember the old place by. ;)

Well, I'm off for a bit more practice before the reptilians arrive for the harvest .. that's gonna be some precious AND righteous video AND audio, lol. Put on a good show, Earthlings. ;) Take care .. of what little time humanity has left. :nervous:

Hey Dera,

Looks like it's now the age of moving pictures (well, not much moving in these yet, ha) and sound. I recorded a bunch of test video/audio while out, just practicing to see what works and what doesn't and how I should use this stuff outside for some consistent good results (from capture to upload). While these uploads are not the best quality video, viewing the original on a large screen looks fantastic. And I can also control it all remotely too, meaning later, when I get serious about recording something, I can go sit a distance away and not have to worry about capturing my breathing or swollowing or heartbeat (seriously, you can hear this stuff when the mic gain is turned all the way up).

Nah, those were just practice. I want to do some long nature records, but before I venture off to do so I need to practice. I learned quite a bit just messing around the other day, i.e. I should not rely on auto white balance because it is not consistent and it becomes obvious when cutting and pasting scenes together (hey, why is the grass suddenly a different tone of green, ha), don't even breath or swallow when within 20 feet of the mic (better yet, move far away while recording), and check the flight schedule to avoid large jets overhead from messing everything up, ha. Actually though, you can easily fix any objectionable sound issues, but it's not so easy to do so with the video. While a scene LOOKS pretty static and unchanging from moment to moment, everything does actually change and so you just can't cut 20 seconds of a video oops out of a long recording without the shadows and lighting suddenly shifting. You can cut and splice audio though without anyone noticing.

Anyhow, I got tired of the old static silent picture frames on the walls. I can load some nature videos into those picture frames that play MP4 files and hang them on the walls in my survival cave and pretend they are windows, ha. I'll record some scenes of sunny summer days, rainy stormy days, etc., you know, stuff to help remember how the Earth use to look like before the humans vs. nature doomage messes it all up.

Lot of folks here have been asking about you. Don't be a stranger. If we only have a bit of time before the good old doom and gloom hits, as Dera said, we might as well ride out whatever time we have left together with friends.
I don't get along well with humans any more these days. Their refuse to surrender and cease their attacks against nature is the reason why planet Earth is going to get all messed up come November and for that I can not forgive them. I stand opposed to what humanity is doing and intends to continue to do, and thus that technically makes humans the enemy. I have to keep my contact with humans to a minimum else nature might become suspicious and suspect me of fraternizing with the Earthlings and that could get me into a lot of trouble. It was okay before when I was trying to convince humans to stop attacking nature, but that's all over because their doom is certain now. And beside, I'm tired of getting into arguments with humans, it's pointless .. now. Time is also too short now spending it engaged in pointless arguments concerning how humanity is behaving here on Earth. And I'm sure the meat eaters don't need me reminding them how murderous and disgusting they are any more than I need to hear another lame excuse concerning their tasted bud preferences, lol, barf, ha. It's too difficult to remain civil with those that would make a lunch out of my friends. If it is sentient, you're not suppose to kill it OR eat it. And I feel very uncomfortable humans, especially when they begin to get hungry, seriously, ha.

Pretty country where you are.....the Earth is such a beautiful place...it's all really more than very sad what we are doing to her :17:
Not sad enough though to prompt humanity into surrendering their horrendous assaults against nature. It is all so sad. I have no idea why humanity would rather chose doom than surrender and peace with nature.

Nature blew through the cities here a few weeks ago. I was a couple miles away from where the tornado ripped through northern Minneapolis burbs at a friends attending a party. I was recording some video of my grandson when the sirens went off and the rains started to come down really heavy and the wind was enough to blow you over if you were outside. Here's a picture I took of a cute doggie just after the storm passed as they were headed out to search for any survivors that needed to be put out of their misery, ha: Cute Doggie (http://evenmo.com/cgi-bin/i/photos/2011/Reg_Marlys/IMG_4079_1280x1024.jpg) (I don't think he ever sniffed a half-human before, ha). He looks disappointed (http://evenmo.com/cgi-bin/i/photos/2011/Reg_Marlys/IMG_4191_1280x1024.jpg) here, must be because they didn't find any leftover damaged hewmons to eat, ha.

Anyhow, when I get some good records of Earth, I'll upload some 1920x1080 HD videos, and some longer audio records. These will come in handy while hiding down below waiting until it's once again safe and hospitable to live on the surface of this planet. I better record a bunch so they don't get old after a few years, ha.

Later.

Divinorumus

Hey Project, it's been a while.

I had to get a new camera last December, I had far exceeded the MTBF of 50,000 shutter releases on my Canon 20D and it started triggering randomly and excessively. So, seeing how I was already significantly invested in Canon EF-S glass, the obvious upgrade choice was the Canon 7D camera (another APS-C sized sensor .. i.e. 1.6 x mm of actual lens .. thus 10mm would actually be 16mm).

It takes 18 MP stills and can record up to 1920x1080 HD video (it can also do 60 fps at lower resolution). The quality of the video, the original straight from the camera (and not compressed to hell when uploaded to sites like YouTube), is outstanding. AND, I can do video through all of my photography glass now. Keep in mind though that it records to FAT32 PCMCIA cards, so you will be limited to 4 GB files, meaning your shots will be limited to 8 or 10 minutes or something like that, depends on the scenes I suppose. A fast 64 GB PCMCIA card will set you back around $300 .. each.

The Canon 7D is a super camera. You probably can't find any now though after that nuke mess in Japan basically shut down Canon's and Nikon's SLR and glass business. I know most of their popular lenses are out of stock everywhere. But the 7D is a still camera by nature, not a camcorder. You can't use it like a camcorder, you use it more like a professional video camera when doing video. There's no auto-focus (or rather, you wouldn't want to auto focus OR manually hit the focus button while recording, DSLR's scan the entire focal range during a focus, to find the near and far objects in a scene, so to automatically recommend an adequate aperture setting and focal point setting). You must know ahead of time what you are going to video record, so that you can set your focus, depth/aperture, and exposure related settings such as ISO and shutter speed, etc. You would also want to establish and FIX your white balance setting so that colors in different takes/scenes that will be cut and pasted together look consistent in tonal appearance.

Also, because it is primarily a still camera, the audio it records sucks. The camera audio recorder has automatic gain permanently turned ON and you can't turn it off! CRAP! That means, when you're not suppose to be hearing anything, the audio will instead get load with background noise and hiss, which is stupid because it is suppose to remain quiet when it's quiet. The stupid camera cranks up the audio gain to max when it's SUPPOSE to be QUIET! How freaking stupid is THAT?! So, to get around the audio issue, I use a Zoom H4n audio recorder, which I would have used anyhow. The thing is spiffy cool. I won't go into everything it does, that would take hours to type out, but if you're into singing, playing musical instruments, or recording the sounds of nature, or recording an interview with someone, doing voice-overs, whatever, you probably already have one of these (or similar).

That H4n recorder also solves the issue of distant sound recording, i.e. wireless mics -- I won't need any now. I can set the camera up and walk around with the audio recorder in my hand, or clipped behind me using an external mic. Or I can set the mic up in a fixed spot and walk around with the camera. Post processing to replace the cameras recorded audio track with the audio track from the H4n is as simple as it gets. The files have date/time stamps to match them up, and you can visually align the waveforms in seconds! And if for any reason it doesn't sync up at the end, most decent video editing software will stretch it out simply by entering the number of frames to expand or contract the audio by.

That H4n also has two XLR inputs and can supply 24/48V phantom power, but don't expect two AA batteries to last very long, ha, you'll want to use the included power adapter for that or some big beefy external battery.

I also got the Canon WFT-5A device for the 7D. It is a WiFi device that does a number of things. The most important thing it does and why I got it is that it allows me to remotely control the camera and all of it's functions and features, including live view. I can access the camera using a wireless notebook computer and Canon's EOS Utility for total control, or I can have limited but functional access using any web browser on a device such as an iPad or WiFi enabled browser device. It functions as a web server, allowing anyone you grant access to view your photos and videos straight from the camera, and without interrupting the photographer. It can also automatically FTP every photo and video you take to a server anywhere in the world (assuming you are on a network connected to the Internet). It supports ad-hoc connections so you can work with it in the field and not need to drag around a router, ha. And you can attach a USB storage device (hard disk or flash memory stick) to it and copy/backup all your photos and video on the PCMCIA card without needing a computer. Mostly though, it will allow me to position the camera where normally I couldn't position myself, thus allowing me to capture photos and video I would otherwise not be able to capture, with complete control of the camera and my wireless flash. The WFT is most often used by professional photographers for things like school photo shoots, and those santa photos stands in the mall. The photographer can snap away uninterrupted and the camera will automatically send the images to an assistant that can review and print them, or they can access them on demand without having to interrupt the photographer or camera, etc.

Finally, all the cool toys that I had wanted years ago that either were not made yet, or were too damn expensive to consider a toy, are now available. Now that this stuff doesn't cost any more than a good fishing boat, it's a pity everything is going to end come November. But, that's usually how my luck goes .. ha, watch, the day after I win the lotto, I'll die of a heart attack, ha. Funny, why is it that everything is made to balance out in the end like that, even our good luck and bad luck. Can we not escape with a bit more good luck on our side than bad in the end ??? for a change ??

I'll get better with this stuff soon. Maybe I'll go to the zoo and take some video of all the animals screwing, ha, something for the earthlings to salivate over during dinner, ha ha ha. ... yummy yummy animals, huh, earthlings? ha ha.

Later .. I got monkey bread to remove from the oven ... .. and no, ha, it's not really made of monkeys, earthlings, so stop drooling lol

Awesome set up :) I have a similar although far less fancy setup, Nikon d5000, and a M-Audio Microtrack II recorder (basically same as yours but no built-in mic). I actually am using my Kodak Zi8 (http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-Pocket-Video-Camera-Black/dp/B002HOPUPC) for most of my video since it is so small and the quality is great, even in low light. I record a lot of music concerts and do a synced audio recording using something similar to http://www.soundprofessionals.com/mas_assets/full/MS-BMC-3.jpg (PS: I highly recommend the sound professional's equipment, and great service).

The coolest thing I have found recently for my cam is an Eye-Fi (http://www.eye.fi/) card - I have it set up so as soon as I take a photo on my camera, it uploads (while in the field - it does an ad-hoc wifi connection) to my phone (android phone with 64GB of memory) so it is backed up immediately, and you can view it in about a minute after taking it. Once I get home (when my phone sees an access point it knows) my phone uploads the files to flickr and to my NAS backup system (uploads basic jpeg to flickr and saves my RAW photos to NAS). This has seriously changed how I use my camera, it is like a continuous system from camera to web, with no wires, no fuss at all. PLUS the eye-fi card itself takes a "snapshot" of available wifi networks when it takes a photo, and then when it uploads it is geolocated automatically against the skyhook (http://www.skyhookwireless.com/) database (a database of wifi access points with geo coordinates). It also automates uploading videos to my NAS and into youtube, no extra steps necessary. Amazingly my d5000 even has a menu item in its firmware for turning this on or off, and it will stay awake until the photos are uploaded.

I like the idea of your wireless control system. I can do that but need a USB cable to my phone or to a laptop in order to do it. I took a ton of product shots this way, great way to quickly see what you need to fix or change, you never run out of room on your card, and you don't shake the cam as you shoot since it is basically a cable release.

Ah, a Nikon person .. lol. Back when I was deciding upon what my first DSLR would be, I looked at both Canon and Nikon .. and I gave each a fair honest chance to impress me, but it took about 2 seconds to select Canon .. and for the same reason many did: CMOS sensor! Nikon had no CMOS models at that time. I like to do a lot of night photography, low noise on long and higher ISO exposures was at the top of my list.

I heard about the EyeFi card, but my desire was the ability to control the camera wirelessly. Yeah, I could control the 7D through a USB connection too, but that was limited .. tethered .. too conspicuous too, ha.

The WFT-5A also supports geo-tagging via a USB GPS stick, but I have no need for that right now (I suppose I could have used that a couple months ago when I strapped my camera into the passenger seat of my spaceship and took a cruise around Earth going warp 180, ha .. actually, I 3x'd it, my space ship doesn't really go that fast). It also supports DLNA devices, such as DLNA picture frames and video displays and entertainment systems, televisions, etc.

What I could have used was a slate computer that runs Windows, something simple for field use. I was waiting to see if the Fujitsu Q550 would fit the bill, but now I don't want one if they only available in glow-in-the-dark green NOW (lol). Seriously, radiation is in almost everything coming from Japan and it's really bad now. That whole entire island and all those over there are going to have to be contained and isolated from the rest of the world. And to make matters worse, it looks like I won't ever be buying any more Canon products unless they start making them elsewhere real soon. So sad .. 2011 looks like the end of so many things ..

Cameras are fun to play with. And it's great to have piles and piles of memories backed up onto disc, ha.

My uses are not too demanding, nikon vs. canon, well it is like comparing ferrari vs lamborghini (or something like that). It works well, and the glass in front of it is more important. I had a huge assortment of lovely old nikkor lenses from my film camera set and figured that was the way to go. It was also only $500 for the body :) My old film camera was a spotmatic F (two bodies) I did wedding photography, portraits etc. Now I am purely a for-fun photog.

May as well post a photo while I am here, in fact I may have posted this before.

That was my intent too in the beginning, when going from film to digital. I thought I could keep all my film glass for use with my first digital camera. NOT! It didn't take long to realize THAT wasn't going to work out at all, at least for myself. Results were disappointing. What I noticed right off the bat was the vignetting. EEK! Apparently film was not particular what angle the photons hit the film at, film is FLAT! Digital sensors on the other hand have little pits, tubes, that expect light to be hitting the sensor pretty much straight on, else it won't be entirely captured at the base of that pit/tube/whatever .. something like that.

Anyhow, I had to give away all my film lenses and replace them with aspherical lenses. The chromatic aberration was also horrible using those film lenses on my APS-C sensor digital camera. Those lenses were inferior on my digital camera. I also prefer fixed length lenses on a digital camera now. They are brighter and produce higher quality images for the $$$. My feet are my zoom now. I do like my 10-22mm lens though, but I would like to get a bright fixed wide lens, maybe the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM ... (yeah right .. no lens shall cost MORE than the camera, lol).

I really like taking wider angle shots, I prefer to capture all that my eyes are capturing and 10mm is close enough, which is 16mm though on the APS-C sensor. When I put my face right up to a picture, I want it to seem as if I was there again.

This weekend I'm going to do a little time traveling, take a quick trip back into the past, the 50's. I'll take some photos and share later this weekend. (to hell with the prime directive NOW, huh?!) I need to locate and retrieve a brand new clutch for a 1957 Chevy else I won't be able to get back to the future this fall when the game is all over.

Later ..

Those are white leaves on that tree in the video ..

Anyhow, I just got back from doing a little time traveling. Took almost 2400 photos, hundreds of them autos, it's going to take me weeks to go through them all. I started posting some of them as I work through them all, limited in size (1280 width max) to conserve on storage AND bandwidth, you can view them HERE (http://evenmo.com/). It will take me quite a while to post them. Hit refresh on your browser if/when revisiting to update any page(s) as I update them.

Please ignore any ghosts (and body parts thereof, such as bodiless feet, headless bodies, multiple arms and legs, and twins, lol), it's an artifact of my shooting technique to rid the scene of humans that tend to always get in MY damn way, ha. The technique works better when they are closer than further away simply because of the speed at which they are appearing to move within the frame. Normally I would post process and eliminate them all, but in these photos of a time gone bye, the ghost affect actually adds some magic to them, ha.

Gawd, I have hundreds of vintage autos, and each and everyone is a keeper. I had a lot of fun. And I was so freaking stoned while doing so, ha.

Yes, lol. I was rather surprised to see that out of the 150,000 or so visitors, only 4 others were running around with their cameras on tripods. I spoke to two of them and verified they were up to the same.

I'm just gonna go through them quickly and apply a half-ass tone mapping, using 3 to 5 exposures, and then later go back through them and pick out half a dozen I like the best and then spend a little more than a miniute I'm spending on each on my first pass through them all.

I took about 2400 photos. Divide that by 3, 6, and a few 9 exposure shots, and I think I have about 400 unique cars photos (out of over the 10,000+ that were there where I time traveled to, lol). I started at 8AM and ran out of steam around 6PM. I can't recall how many deep knee bends I did that day, but two days later and I'm still recovering.

I did, but I made three copies of the single image, then adjusted them in Photoshop first to correct the underexposed and over exposed components, and then I tone mapped them using Photomatrix Pro.

It was a fun day. And, with 18 MP RAW images, there's lots of stuff I can crop from these wide shots to create additional unique looking shots/prints.

Hey, Topper. I don't think I've ever heard of the magazine Easyrider.

I took photos of over 400 autos that day and they were all bracketed exposures, and in numerous instances, multiple exposures (in order to eliminate/minimize as many of the hewmon infestations as possible that were contaminating the scene).

There were so many people there that Friday that it was practically impossible to get a photo without some hewmons big nose poking into it. Gawkers were constantly walking up and peeking into these vehicles, so I had to occasionally take at least two sets of bracketed exposures, sometimes three. By taking additional photos, I can use portions of each to assemble a photo with no hewmons in it. That very first piece of auto-ass on page one at the top always had hewmons standing around on either the left or right side of that car. So, I took two sets of bracketed exposures and used pieces of each to assemble a photo without hewmons (via software). First pass attempt was set to auto, thus some ghosting. But hewmons can be totally eliminated with manual intervention, but I liked the ghost effect in these nostalgic vintage auto photos .. it's kind of like they are the ghosts of the previous owners, ha, and just doing a batch process on 2400 photos (which comprise about 400 unique auto shots) is so much easier (and if I find something that I don't want any hewmons in, I can manually process that one myself, ha).

Anyhow, it's all for fun and enjoyment. It was kind of challenging trying to get some photos that might be keepers when there's so damn many people contaminating a scene. Years ago I ran into a scene I really wanted to get a photo of, but there were constantly dozens of people walking back and forth past the building. So .. what I did was buy a few ND filters to cut the light down and stacked them on the front of my lens and then I did a long exposure on a heavy dark overcast day ... I think it was over a minute exposure, maybe two or more, can't recall for sure. Anyhow, the building cam out beautiful .. and not a single hewmon was seen in the photo! I did recall having to try a few times, but I did get one where no hewmon stopped long enough to haunt my photo, ha. Of course that was easy, doing it in HDR is a bit more tricky. If you look carefully though some of those photos, you'll see faces in trees, feet without bodies, leg-less hewmons floating around, and even more odd things can be found in the reflections of all that chrome and shiny paint, ha.

Div:

Those shots are epic. It's very difficult to take photos of cars (especially 'classic' cars) that aren't boring. You have succeeded. Thanks for posting.

The only really difficut part is using a 10-22mm lens (although x 1.6 on an APS-C sensor) and trying to capture a subject AND wide background while keeping everything verticle (and not tilty/slanty/pinchy around the edges). Thanks for the complement but really, it's the HDR effect that makes them look pretty. I don't think I spent more than a minute or two taking each (mostly I was just waiting for the hewmons to get out of my way, ha).

Anyhow, I have hundreds to process and review and I haven't much time to devote on photography all the time, what with final preparations for end-times taking higher priority, but I just got me an Asus EP121 slate computer which will make working on photos a LOT easier (I don't like sitting in a chair at a desk working on photos, so maybe I'll make more time now that it's more convenient) in addition to allowing me to run Canon's EOSUtility for total wireless remote control of the camera (allowing more difficult shots, i.e. where my head can't fit to use the viewfinder on the camera).

Later. (cats are calling)

Tks, you're too kind. Photography is fun, is a good excuse to go somewhere, and all that walking and lugging around a backpack full of (necessary) gear can be a good workout (i.e. 10 hour hike in the woods, or taking hundreds of auto show pictures, ha). I like chrome and bright colors and green on the trees ... I could stand for fewer hewmons though, lol .. gawd, they are all over the place .. the hewmons that is .. they breed like rats, ha. .. .. hum, I've not seen a rat though in months, come to think of it .. . ?? Too many hewmons all over this planet .. :guilty:

anyhow, I added a few more pics onto a third page (http://evenmo.com/50autos/index3.html) .. .. oh, btw, if you notice a little darkness on the corners of some of these, it's because the lens was full wide, and I ALWAYS leave my UV filter on .. ALWAYS .. and I had a polarizer over that, which was one too many, ha, but it's easier to FIX that later if I choose to print it than to keep removing the UV from the front of my lens to put on another .. I don't want to mess up the threads on the lens by constantly swapping lenses .. and really, it only shows up on full wide photos AND when I have 2 filters on .. easier to clone-stamp that away in photoshop on any potential KEEPER that I will print.

Hey Proj,

That reminds me, butterflies will abound around here soon too. Hey, ya think it's possible to get an HDR close-up of a butterfly? Hey, Topper. That's one of the most difficult shots to get, where they have thier wings fully deployed, and you're aligned for a perfect focused/dof shot. Now try to get that kind of shot of a dragon fly, straight across the back, wings fully deployed. After that, try hummingbird moths next, lol. It can be entertaining and challenging chasing down photos of elusive critters of Earth. It can be a good workout too hauling around a backpack of gear and another filled with yummies and beverages (unless you hike close to provisions, such as along many trails).

Nice capture.

My camera is grounded again today. I don't allow it to play outside when the temp is in the high 90's AND the humidity is like 95% unless there is a good photo-op going on out there (i.e. some event or unusual reason, etc.). Humidity led to the retirement of my last camera, although I was ready for a new and better one now anyhow. I shed no tears when it began to malfunction every warm humid summer day last year, it was 6 years old .. obsolete by today's standards ! ;)

Anyhow, maybe I'll go out later if it cools off, take some pictures of the hellish conditions we're having to endure around here after our state government shutdown ... oh woe are we ..... the misery without a gangter overlord overseeing every aspect of MY PRIVATE life ... .. lol .. NOT !

... anxiously awaiting the day I can take some excellent pictures of the government fire sale , ha.

Oh, this is a tone-mapped picture of Luci sitting out on the deck.

(1280x800 wallpaper (http://evenmo.com/photos/cats/IMG_5986-1280x800.jpg) - fits what I'm using right now)

It's fun practicing tricky shots. Luci was just sitting there fixated on something she was watching so I took the opportunity to see if I could get 3 shots to cover her sitting in the shade of the building, the clouds in the sky, all the green trees, etc. I took 3 shots, 1/20, 1/50, and 1/8th of a second, no tripod or remote trigger, camera simply resting on the deck and lens propped up by my left hand, right hand finger on the trigger, no flash (obviously) .... and surprisingly not so much as a cat whisker moved. I even made a clicking sound to get the attention of her right ear BEFORE taking the first shot, otherwise her ear would have moved AFTER hearing the click of the first shot). Simple, but still tricky, if anything moved during those 3 sequential shots, it would have been a ghostly blurrrrrrr .. ha. This technique brings out a lot of detail. I like the wide perspective, it approximates what I actually see.

Hey Biker,

It was evening, the setting sun, out of frame on the left, was casting that orange color on the clouds. We were in the shade. Too wide a range of light level for today's digital sensors. Here are two of the three shots combined to create the final (HDR/tone-mapped) image:

http://evenmo.com/photos/cats/IMG_5988m.jpg
The above over-exposure captured light/details within the darker/shadow areas in the scene, but you can see the clouds are missing.

http://evenmo.com/photos/cats/IMG_5987m.jpg
In this under-exposure I captured the clouds, but you can see everything else looks dark because the setting sun is low on the western horizon.

http://evenmo.com/photos/cats/IMG_5986_tm-m.jpg
The final image is a product of three separate exposures combined into one. An old trick, made easier today through some excellent software that make the tone-mapping process quick and easy. I did a bunch of winter snow photos back in 2005 that I had to painstakingly blend together using layers and masks in Photoshop that would take 30 minutes each to do manually. Now it's a simple matter of fine tuning a few dozen parameters, ha.

Oh, you should be able to do HDR/tone-mapped images with any camera. Just 1) use a tripod, and 2) take enough shots at different exposures to capture all the detail, from the shadow/darker areas to the brightest.

Use bracketed exposure (i.e. 0, -1, +1 f-stops) if your camera has that feature (most cameras do), or just take each exposure manually ... without moving your camera! Then use a program like PhotoMatix Pro to merge and blend them together (I recommend that program after trying them all). You can create some pretty dramatic results in otherwise challenging lighting situations.

Thanks, but these aren't anything worth printing, but they did end up as wallpaper for whatever computer I'm using at the moment. These are just different than a regular single snapshot. This new camera is about twice as fast as my old 20D so I've been shooting bracketed photos (exposure 0, +1,- 1) more often than not, which allows additional post processing capabilities not possible with a single shot. The tricky part is trying to capture your subject inside of a second with 3 exposures and not have anything move. In that first photo, which is a compilation of all 3 bracketed exposures, only her tail moved (you can see two tips). By tone-mapping multiple exposures, you can eliminate harsh over and under exposed parts of a scene, particularly outside scenes where strong lighting from the sun can produce dark shadows and blown-out too bright skies.

Here are two images tone-mapped together (the trees in the background were in the sun, Luci is sitting in the shade chatting with a bird). I couldn't use the 3rd exposure, there was too much movement ~ her mouth was closed in the last frame.

The black and white wallpaper make it easier to find icons on the screen.

Sorry, I think my dial-up web accelerator made the pictures look fuzzy. Oh well, you get the idea.

that is "mini" asleep on my office chair, once again keeping me from using the computer :)

It was taken with a normal digicam, I just turned it black and white and filtered it a bit to make it look like that.

This one struck me as particularly poignant. Essentially we have Ferlinghetti's rebel bookshop literally overshadowed by the globalist transnational pyramid-bank. The street I was standing on felt like a fault line between two worlds. That is San Francisco. One block away, down a small alley, is the chaotic & sprawling Chinatown. Chinatown is on the move in North Beach.

When I joined City Lights in 1971, and started working with Lawrence, it was clear that it had been very much a center of protest, for people with revolutionary ideas and people who wanted to change society.

Wow Squid! I love the shot of San Francisco. It is visually surreal and beautiful. The photo of the wasp is incredible. I've never seen such detail, and the color of the bloom is so intense and gorgeous. The color and composition in all the photos is a feast for the eyes. You have a true talent that is not something that can be taught. :veryhappy

This is the time of the year for baby peacocks around here. Here are some shots of a mamma and her three babies. Click on the pictures to see the little ones in the large format, as they are so well camouflaged you won't see them otherwise.

Here mamma is laying down warming her chicks, but like any 'kids' they jump around in her feathers, and don't sleep when they're supposed to! If you look at the top of her right wing, you can just barely see the head of a little one beginning to poke.

There is a hanging feeding station that I fill once a day, and the hens will come to the kitchen end of the house, and I throw small food that the babies can handle down from the deck. Other than that, the hens are totally on their own as far as taking care of the babies. I'm always fascinated watching the hens 'teach' the little ones different things, like what bugs to eat, where to go or not go, how to get over fences, how to duck under her when something flies overhead, etc.

Judee - I was scared senseless by a screaming peacock today! He (or she) was perched in a tree, and as I walked under s/he let out a blood curdling scream. Is that normal?

Here's a shot I took in Pensacola recently:

It was probably a male peacock in the tree, and there was also probably a female on a nest somewhere nearby. And yes, it's a male peacocks job to 'call out' whenever someone/something walks by.

As for your photography, I don't know how it could get any better Squid. Honestly!! The composition, color, and subtle energy in that photograph is quite simply amazing!! You are a master of your craft!
