I tried Linux Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) and Fedora (http://fedoraproject.org/). I like the operating systems but for now I like the convenience of XP. I took it back to where I bought my laptop and he confirmed that I could use the XP disk from my old system. It loaded fine and works great.....except for one problem. Several times since then while shutting down a message would appear with the shut down window. Strange, I've never seen that before.

Anyone here see this before??

Windows Vista seems to work fine, and the Aero features makes it look better and easier to use when you have many Windows open and apps running. XP is stable if you have all the updates.

My stupid version of Vista can't even open Power Points. :spidey:

I bought, knowing nothing, a "home" version of Vista. It doesn't have office, either, and I never heard of "Flash".

I had, before it croaked, Windows 2000 Professional. How did I know they would leave all the good stuff out on this damned OS? :cussing:

Sorry to hear about Vista but again has anyone ever seen updates just as the computer is shutting down? I haven't seen that before. I just don't like something updating with out me knowing what it is. I have windows update set at manual.

Friends send me emails in Power Point format and I can't open them. I am plagued by all the file formats and I don't know how to fix it.

One would think you might be able to download a viewer for free at Microsoft or other shareware site. You can also pick up older copies of Office cheap on eBay. I'd locate the link for a viewer but I keep all the Microsoft sites blocked on my proxy server.

OH that happens to me all the time on my other computers. You're just paranoid.
I finally got the updates loaded and all the spy ware off this new laptop ... yet it still
refuses to load any proper virus software. Darnest thing I've every seen to date.
