Detroit has decided to close its historic Belle Isle Aquarium to help reduce a growing budget deficit, Local 4 reported.


Officials say closing the facility will save the city more than $530,000 in annual expenses and millions in capital needed to keep the structure sound.


Staff at the aquarium will be placed in other positions at the Detroit Zoo or the Belle Isle Zoo.


The aquarium currently displays 60 exhibits with a total capacity of 32,000 gallons of water.


Its operators are now looking for new homes for its freshwater and tropical freshwater fish.


The 101-year-old Belle Isle Aquarium is North America's oldest, continuously operating public aquarium.


Its closing date has not been determined.
