Muse and Vigo, I'm so glad the quake wasn't a really bad one and that you're both safe! I lived in So. California for eighteen years, and the quakes scared the crap out of me! Now I'm up here in Oregon where we're expecting a 9.0 that will make any California quakes look like child's play! Go Figure! No place on earth is safe from disasters...

Very Happy that both of you are safe and everything is OK, MuseNoir and Vigo.

I know that it must be frightening to experience Earthquakes like these. Thankfully, I have never experienced anything but a very minor tremor but my section of Kentucky is in the New Madrid Fault Zone area so it is possible that a major Earthquake could strike at any time. Hopefully, dangerous and devastating Earthquakes and other calamities will evade all of us forever.

    Take care.

"It's usually only a drop in the ocean..."

Expert: L.A.'s 5.4 quake 'small sample' of one to come

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.4 earthquake shook the Los Angeles metropolitan area Tuesday, leaving residents rattled but causing no serious damage or injuries.

However, the temblor served as a warning to southern Californians who had not experienced an earthquake in some time: the "Big One" remains a possibility.

"This is a sample, a small sample," said Kate Hutton, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology.

"This is somewhere between small and moderate." She said there is a 5 percent chance the quake could be a precursor to a larger earthquake. After 24 hours, she said, that chance will drop to 1 percent.

"Every earthquake relieves some stress," Hutton said. "It's usually only a drop in the ocean. In other words, the amount of stress released by this earthquake is minuscule compared to the amount that's built up and is building up for the Big One when it happens some day in the future."

    And when will that be?

    . . . .

Yes, that's the reality that we live with here! For people that are new to California, yesterday's quake was a real shocker. For those of us who have been through other quakes over the years it was moderate, and unbelievably there was no real damage any where. But bigger ones are on the way - that's the message I have heard for my entire life, and it's just part of living here.

Keep an eye out for frogs.

Frog Migration: Omen to China Earthquake Disaster

On May 5th, many Chinese locals noticed thousands of frogs on the move. They were seen traveling without fear of traffic as they crossed streets in mass floods.

Many Chinese sensed the migration as a bad omen of a coming natural disaster, but the Chinese government told them that it was just a natural migration for the purpose of propagation. This calmed the people and no one took the omen very seriously.

On Monday, 12th of May, at about 2:45pm, central China region recorded a 7.8-magnitude quake which occured near Wenchuan County, Sichuan province, that killed nearly 10,000 people.

Many civilian houses and roads were collapsed and damaged. In one Dujiangyan city middle school, 900 students and teachers were buried in the collapsed building, at least 50 were killed.

The quake was the largest the region has seen for over a generation. It was so strong, even countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong felt the shake.

Many people are now calling the Chinese Earthquake Test Centers “useless”, as they were unable to even detect the earthquake before it happened. When they finally announced the earthquake had occured, it was 12 minutes after the disaster, and 2 minutes after the US had announced a large earthquake in China.

As for the Frogs and their omen, Chinese scientists stated animals have much better sense than human on detecting the natural disasters like this.

So much for “migration for propagation”.

My nephew was in a highrise in Dwtn LA

I called my brother in Chico to let him know that Russ had just gone through a 5.8 at the time but it was downgraded to a 5.4.

They called to see if he was okay. He called his parents back and said he was okay. He went home to check his apt. at lunch time and called his mom to say the apartment was in shambles. She said what how bad? He said well it looks the same as when I left for work this morning and started laughing as he is a single guy who does not keep his place picked up. Lol....glad it was not bigger. I went through the 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. San Jose was 12 miles from the center in the Santa Cruz mountains. Quite the ride and some big tragedies that day.

Up here in Alaska, certain islands in the Aleutians have been rockin' and rollin' and a volcano woke up. We are way over due for even a "moderate" quake here in the mainland.
The more time that passes between quakes of 5.something here in Alaska, the more I worry. Not an active hand wringing type of worry, but more of a feeling like, "OK, let's have a 5.something soon to ease the stresses or else we'll have another "Big One".

Do we have a Volcano Topic area? I'll look for one, or start one, especially since we have about 5 Sisters of Pela to the west of me smoking and burping.

2 strong undersea earthquakes rattle Asia
    11 hours ago

TOKYO, Japan (AP) — Two strong earthquakes rattled Asia on Thursday, triggering alerts for a tsunami that harmlessly lapped Japan's northern coast and another in Indonesia that didn't materialize but briefly sent residents fleeing to high ground.

The more powerful of the quakes, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit at 9:21 a.m. off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido at a depth of about 19 miles (30 kilometers), the country's meteorological agency said.

A 4-inch (10-centimeter) tsunami rippled to shore 35 minutes later, but there were no signs of damage.

"There was some light shaking, but it was nothing major," said Yukio Yoshida, a police spokesman in Hokkaido.

Authorities temporarily advised about 10,600 residents of Ofunato in Iwate Prefecture (state), about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, to evacuate their homes and ordered people to stay away from beaches.

An hour earlier, northeastern Indonesia was hit by a 6.6-magnitude quake that struck 55 miles (90 kilometers) beneath the Molucca Sea, the U.S. Geological Survey. Though on the same tectonic plate, the temblors were unrelated, local officials said.

A tsunami alert was briefly issued over the radio and television and people in the Maluku capital of Ternate, which was closest to the epicenter, fled from houses and buildings as the earth rumbled beneath them.

The feared wave never came, however, and there were no reports of casualties or damage.

"I ran out of the hotel with other guests and we fled to high ground," Benyamin Otte said. "I could see people on the beach, checking to see if the were any signs of a tsunami, but everything looked normal. Within a half hour, we were heading back down."

Indonesia and Japan are both prone to seismic upheaval due to their location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that battered much of the Indian Ocean coastline and killed more than 230,000 people — 131,000 of them in Aceh province alone.

A tsunami off Java island last year killed nearly 5,000.

Japan also is one of the world's most earthquake prone nations.

In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the western port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people and experts believe Tokyo has a 90 percent chance of being hit by a major quake over the next 50 years.

Associated Press Writer Niniek Karmini contributed to this report from Jakarta.

Personally, because of where I live, I am worried about the quakes taking place on the Juan de Fuca plate. There have been numerous ones off of Vancouver Island, even some quite large ones. Today, there was a series of quakes off of Washington State. 'twould seem that the Juan de Fuca plate is loosening up and down its length, much like the lid being pried off of a paint can...

Magnitude 7.0 - SEA OF OKHOTSK

Earthquake hits off Russia's Far East coast
    Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:08pm GMT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Far-East coast on Monday triggering a tsunami warning which was soon lifted, Russian emergency services said.

The earthquake struck at a depth of just over 300 km beneath the Sea of Okhotsk at 9.05 p.m. (9:05 a.m. GMT) between the Kamchatka peninsula and the Pacific Coast island of Sakhalin, the site of major oil and natural gas deposits.

"Everything is calm now. The quake did not cause damage and no one was hurt," the spokeswoman for the Kamchatka regional branch of the ministry, Olga Mikhailova, told Reuters.

She said the tsunami warning lasted 30 minutes.

An earlier report from the U.S. Geological Survey gave the earthquake a magnitude of 7.
