NO. 1. Best Ghost Photo Of The Year 2008
Sent to us by Joe LaRocca
    Queen Mary Ghost Photo

While aboard the Queen Mary a few years back my Uncle George took this picture of what he thought was an ordinary vestibule. When he got home he printed out his pictures but wasn’t expecting to find what looks like a ghost walking down the hall. My Uncle is 78 and does not believe in ghosts, but this freaked him out. He doesn’t even like to talk about the incident. I was just watching a special on the 10 most haunted places and when the Queen Mary was listed I felt compelled to send in the picture.
Many emails have poured in to Hauntedamericaours.com since the original posting of the Queen Mary Ghost photo. All stating that they believe this to be the best Ghost Photo ever taken on the Queen Mary to date. Many have also voted this to be the best Number 1 Ghost Photo of the year for 2008.
No. 2. Ghost Photo Of A Full Body Apparition!

Kristen Sheley Gets A Full Body Apparition! Undisclosed theater in Sacramento, CA. Sheley his not new to ghost hunting. She is The - Historian / Investigator for H.P.I International www.HPIparanormal.net

I grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland that is best known for being the World Headquarters of Nike. After an uneventful childhood, I went off to college at the University of Oregon to earn a journalism degree. Then, jaded by the world of contemporary media, I earned a Masters of Education to teach high school English. A job offer took me from my hometown to Sacramento in 2003, and I`ve been here since. In my ``free`` time, I write fiction and am the author of a YA series called ``Partners in Time``, which you can easily find at the local Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobel, etc.

Regarding ghosts, I have been interested in those since I can remember. I was quite the reader as a child and devoured fiction and non-fiction books about haunted places and ghosts. For a time, my mom fretted about me because the non-fiction books on ghosts were set next to books on demons and the occult in our local library. As I grew up, I collected articles in The Oregonian newspaper about haunted locations (local or otherwise) that were printed, usually around Halloween, and loved the show ``Unsolved Mysteries`` for the occasional pieces they had about haunted places. In high school, I spent a semester doing a 60 page research paper on ghosts, impressing a teacher who thought that the selection of such a topic would not be taken seriously.

During my teenage journalistic endeavors, I wrote a story about the haunted McLoughlan House in Oregon City , Ore. for my high school`s newspaper, interviewing the curator-at-the-time about her experiences there. I also wrote a story about the haunted auditorium in South Eugene High School for the UO`s student newspaper, after a tip from a college roommate, and was able to track down a student who had possibly captured the ghost on film. Please also see: Ghost may haunt South Eugene High School

No 3. Real Photo of A Ghost Possessed Psychic Medium

Paranormal Investigator French Psychic Medium Jeanette Q. Baird Flew all the way in from Paris France to become Possessed by a ghost or demon at a paranormal investigation in New Mexico. Gayle Knapp sends us this photo as what she believe to be the image of a real ghost that haunts a young single mothers Roswell Haunted House. She Believes this is the most haunted house in New Mexico.
No. 4. The Real Ghostly Eye
The ghosts eye is watching you. This ghost photo is said by many to defy explanation. The ghost eye seems very human and life like.
    No. 5. Alcatraz Ghosts Photo

Alcatraz Ghosts: This reported as real Ghost Photo was sent to us by Glenn Shelton. He believes he has captured a real Alcatraz Ghost on film. Shelton says he believes this proves that Alcatraz is the" Most Haunted Federal Prison" In the world.
A word about the "Top Ten Best Ghost Photos in the World 2008" from Shannon McCabe of Ghost Girls TV & H.P.I International: When I first saw these photos I was skeptical, as I am with anything that people send me, but these photos made me take a second look. I must say, that these photos are very impressive, and I have seen a lot of photos in my 14 years of paranormal investigating. I especially like the #1 photo, it's quite hard to debunk and it certainly doesn't look altered. What makes me think that this photo is really something is the fact that spirit usually "floats" above the ground
making it appear like it's levitating. It is also known that spirit can sometimes manifest without certain body parts, hence the disappearing "legs". Way to go Joe LaRocca!
And I am very fond of photo #2. It happens to have come from one of my investigators for H.P.I. International, Kristen Sheley. Kristen & Holly DeLaughter were investigating upstairs at a local theater in Sacramento, CA. I was alerted to the apparition as I was downstairs watching orbs on my monitor. I ran upstairs as quickly as I could to get in on the action and was wowed by the photo that the HPI investigators caught! I can attest that we tried to duplicate this photo with a human standing at the end of the hall, to no avail. It was a great capture, and we hope to capture more apparitions as the years
    go on...
Great job to all those that submitted photos! Keep them coming for next year, and maybe you'll be one of the Top Ten Best Ghost Photos!

Is there a Grinch for Halloween?!?!?

I hear you though Div. I wish the fakers, the photoshopites, the debunkers would just leave the cosmos and stop infusing tons to BS and disinformation, so that we could really try to solve atleast one age old mystery of this universe.

I don't think all ghost photos are faked, shopped etc. though Div. I have a few of my own that I have taken, I know there was no-one there and there is no explanation for what ended up on film.

Maybe, but I don't think ghosts are physical manifestations, if anything they seem more like products of the mind. I've seen ghosts, but I knew they were waking hallucinations, waking dreams, day dreams in your mind while your eyes are open.

Take for example that first image above of the ghost in the ship corridor. CLEARLY that was a low light non-flash photo of a moving person taken at too long of an exposure setting - CLEARY the case and EASILY re-creatable. I know because I have accidentally and intentionally taken many similar shots before. In some cases, I have shots where the (so-called) ghost wasn't even visible in the 8 bit JPG version of the photo, but was (clearly) visible in the 16 bit RAW copy in the camera. But again, in every case, the ghost was really caused by too long of an exposure setting for the active scene.

Ask anyone who thinks they shot a ghost photo what the minimum shutter speed should be of a scene where people are moving and walking and practically everyone can't answer that and THUS will NOT KNOW what the hell they are doing or talking about. It's like taking a cake out of the oven and noticing it's burnt and proclaiming a ghost is responsible without even checking what the oven temp was set to and for how long.

I think perhaps in certain cases they may be Div, however I don't think that is the majority of what is reported.

There are those cases where a specific event and sequence is repeated over and over again in time and space and don't seem to be "interactive", there are those that manifest in the visual with other attributes....noise, moving objects, actual physical sensation or contact and then of course those that become threatening and even violent.

I guess one could argue whether the above falls in to a "definition of ghost" or what a finite definition of a "ghost" is to which all agree....perhaps we are really talking about the manifestation of energy or entity or both.

Here's one kick at the can for definined what a "ghost" could or could not be.

    GHOSTLY DEFINITIONS

Angels - Contrary to popular conception, angels have never been incarnated into human form and have not lived on earth. Considered to be generally good, angels are servants of a higher being or God and tend to have specific purposes to their existence as relating to humans. Some are messengers, such as Gabriel in the Bible while others are spiritual warriors, such as Michael. Others act as guardians to humans on earth and are the most believed in and witnessed angels in our time. Angels have been described elaborately in various forms, ranging from winged and light filled to non-descript in plain clothes.

    Demons
    - Like angels, demons have never lived and also seem to have specific purposes in relation to humans. They are considered evil and serve the will of Satan. They are known for tempting and tormenting humans and can manifest themselves in nearly any form. They are known for thier ability to possess humans (and even inanimate objects) and cause them to act or perform in manners completely alien to their character, including violently. Removal of a demon requires the services of an exorcist, or otherwise someone considered pious and pure of heart.

    Ectoplasm (Vapors and Mists)
    - A grey, white or bluish colored fog that appears alone or right before the appearance of an apparition. The mist may move in all directions including through physical barriers. It resembles exhaled breath on a cold day or cigarette smoke and is often erroneously identified in ghostly photography.

Apparitions - The appearance of a deceased person or animal that appears in either a definable for blurry form. They often appear suddenly and quickly disappear at a distance, such as in an upper window of a house. Apparitions have been sighted moving through physical barriers such as walls and doors and are often accopanied by a drop in temperature. Generally, apparitions are harmless.

Free Spirits - These are entities that travel or interact with the living. They are also the disembodied spirits of the once living, but they can choose to drop in and interact. They are free to come and go until they reincarnate or move on to a higher level of the astral plane. Ghosts -- A surviving emotional memory of someone who has died traumatically and tragically but is unaware he/she is dead. They may appear confused or frightened. Not being ready or yet able to let go of the physical attachments, they remain in the old and familiar places, repeating the same acts indefinitely until something or someone breaks the cycle for them.
Orbs - Small sphere-shaped masses of energy believed to be either the beginning of an apparition or a complete manifestation unto itself. They move on their own at various speeds. Usually invisible to the naked eye, they are the most common anomaly captured on film. However, the majority of orbs in photographs can be explained away by other means such as dust, insects, or camera flaws. A photo of an orb with a light trail behind is rare and considered more reliable. Orbs can be found just about anywhere.

    Poltergeists
    - Poltergeists are a form of ghost that gains energy from people, most often children or teenagers, and converts it into the ability to move solid objects. Poltergeists will often announce their presence with rapping or other noises and generally create disorder. They like to generate acts of mischief such as throwing furniture about.

Spook Lights - White, blue, or yellow lights useen glowing in the distance at night. Unexplained, they are known by different names including ghost lights, will-o-wisps and ignis fatuus (foolish fire). Many documented examples of ghost lights have been made including the spook lights around Joplin, Missouri, the Marfa Lights in South Texas and the Dover Lights in northwest Arkansas.
Vortexes - Most often spotted indoors, these swirling funnel-shaped mists show up in photographs with a tread-like quality in the body. These anomalies may be spirits themselves, but it is becoming increasingly believed that it is more likely they are a method of transport between two worlds. They are often seen with orbs but have also been spotted alone.

    PLACE MEMORIES?

Some hauntings have an eerie resemblance to life, where ghosts are busy with activities that are common to living people such as walking around or working. "Ghost Experts" describe these hauntings in several ways. The first is that the ghost is simply doing something that he/she did frequently in life. The second assumes that the sci-fi concept of time-space continuum is real and that sometimes two time frames overlap. The third explanation is referred to as a "place memory", which is kind of like a recording of a past event that has imprinted itself on the environment. These are also called residual hauntings and recordings. Images and sounds are impressed upon a place and later replayed in a phenomenon that is similar to watching a loop of a movie film.

So, perhaps there is no ghost in these types of "hauntings", but rather, some kind of psychic "record" of a person from long ago.

THANK YOU! I have taken thousands of photos like this, if you want to as well, simply take a bunch of shots inside in dimmer lighting, with something moving, and force your flash not to fire. Instant "ghosts".

    Question?

Since I am a point and click photographer for now, how would one then be able to determine if a photo could really be a "ghost" or some energy with any certainty and rule out exposure or other technical causes or explanations for these type of photos?

you could post it here If it is a common mistake or lens problem etc, it is quite evident...

Things that are very common in pix that are often called ghosts:

    - non-flash longer exposures indoors, as in #1

    - "orbs", reflections from dust or water particles from flash

    - whiteout parts of images, probably a flash reflection from a mirror or reflective material (as in possessed psychic photo)

    - blacked out part of image, something obstructing lens (as in alcatraz image)

    - ghostly image with someone reasonably clear? probably double exposure

    - eyes, figures, etc in corners? Could be anything really...

Short answer? Very little you could photograph I would immediately say "that is a ghost". Video is a bit better because you can see things in context, and tell more easily what is what.

Point and clicks are especially bad for flash anomalies since the flash is so lose to the lens, reflections come straight back at it, and often overexpose things that are too close (hence you get orbs).

another common one is a "pop and drag" where you fire the flash, but with a longer exposure (some programmed scenes like landscape night mode do this), and a bit of camera shake... this leaves your subject properly exposed, but if you move the camera after the flash fires, you will "smear" any lights in the scene, causing aura-type looks, weird lines or balls across image.

I was looking for the top ghost pics for 2011, however I can't find anything.

Here are some good ones though with some different pics:

    Top 10 Ghost Pics

    I like this one:

    6. The Corroboree Rock Spirit, 1959

Taken by Reverend R.S. Blance at Corroboree Rock near Alice Springs, Australia in 1959, this famous photo has been around for many years and defies explanation to this day. It wouldn’t be difficult to fake this photo with modern photo manipulation software (i.e. Photoshop) but it would have been nearly impossible to do in 1959.

maybe it would have been hard to fake, but it would be quite easy to take a picture of someone in a robe playing the panflute

I think this is more compelling, hard to figure out what type of photo mistake would cause this to happen:
