I'll give it a try. A friend sent me some programs in that format on a CD. I would like to get them transferred so I can listen to them.

As long as they are not copy protected, you can do this in WMP and many other audio conversion utils, try audacity, it is the best thing to try first (open source, free).

M4A should be playable in winamp already though for instance, or anything else with a codec.

I suggest VLC for playing any media file, no more codecs needed.

Alpha, Ipods are fine, they do what they should. Remember you have TONS of space on it, so no need to weed out files (itunes does this automatically after a certain time, you config this in options). Also, itunes crashes and freezes all the time, get used to it (or use songbird).

    2. a large or major undertaking, especially one involving considerable money, personnel, and equipment.
    3. a specific task of investigation, especially in scholarship.
    4. to propose, contemplate, or plan.
    5. to throw, cast, or impel forward or onward.
    6. to set forth or calculate (some future thing).
    7. to extend or protrude beyond something else.
    8. to use one's voice forcefully enough to be heard at a distance, as in a theater.
    9. to produce a clear impression of one's thoughts, personality, role, etc.

what version of itunes are you using project? i had problems with itunes telling me i needed to upgrade my quicktime media player (when i had the latest version) and it would freeze up my computer when it would run. after uninstalling and reinstalling an earlier version (version 6), i haven't had any problems.
i suggested the audacity recorder because it will record anything that you can get to come through your speakers. do you like that program that you linked to in your last post?

I always use latest version of any program. However, I do not use itunes to manage my ipod. I use Songbird (linked to earlier) on Windows, and I use gtkpod on Linux. Both are better than itunes at managing music (umm not hard really).

VLC is the best video/anything player around. It is free software, open source, developed at a university in France. If VLC will not play your file, you will probably never get it to play, ie: it supports everything out of the box.

If you have copy protected songs you have 3 options:

    1. Itunes just un-protected all their music. You can pay .30+ each to get them upgraded. Major scam, but it is fully legal and you are done after.

    2. Unprotect them. There are programs such as fairplay which can do this.

    3. Use the "analog hole" mentioned above, play the songs, and record the output of them. This sucks unless you only have a small collection, and don't mind putting back in all the info like title, artist etc.
