    Frank Herbert's Dune Universe

"Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind"
-Rayna Butler,as told to her by the spirit of Saint Serena

If I only got to take one Sci-Fi book with me to a desert island, Dune would be the book!
Frank Herbert understood people and he had a better than average understanding of what makes us Earthers tick.

Critics like to praise authors as "prophetic and visionary" I'll accept "visionary" for this one. Herbert created a very plausible far future.

    Herberts Dune IS amazing.

In a way, though it is far reaching and futuristic, it is also a history lesson.

I read "The War of the Roses" by Alison Weir, years after I had read Dune. It deals with the feudal England royalties in the 1500 -1700 hundreds, and deals with the constant in fighting between the different "houses" of aristocrasy, the constant jockeying for power. I remember saying to myself, "wow, it's just like Dune".

So in that respect, it's science fiction, that is kind of like a history lesson.

If I had to pick the all time best science fiction series of all time, it would be the Dune series hands down.
