    TAPS Michigan Style

Came back from up north, and while in a restaurant in Sylvania, met some folks from UPPRS (pronounced Uppers) or the Upper Peninsula Paranormal Research Society. They are a member of the TAPS group.

Had a nice talk with the two ladies and, God willing, if Mrs VO and I can score a place up there, they would be willing to take me around for some E.V.P. sessions and photography.

I included a link to their site because they do have some good books available.

Oh, and the trip to Hell? It was devilish!

I once had a UPER cat. UPER? UPPR? (Too far gone from GP )

Well, I see you've been to Hell and back! I've done that myself.

Glad to hear that you made it to Hell and back!

That sounds awesome about the UPPRS VO! That would be very interesting to say the least! Lucky you!

Got some goodies. A t-shirt from the Hell Michigan Volunteer Fire Dept, (should look good at the next weather spotters meeting). Also a swearing parrot for one of the guys at work.

They were interesting, to say the least. And it's going to be fun next spring to go through those places and see some of the things. Not to mention, recording the EVPs!!

The road was paved with good intentions... oh wait.

Sounds like a sign that you are on the right track... any updates on the B&B plans? Nice to know you are already making connections there just in case!!

I've been picking the brain of several people about how to do things, and to get an idea of what I want to do. Then I'm writing down the ideas on paper. One of the members here, who happens to be an architect by trade, convinced me to turn designs over to the people that design. (Hard for me to do since I like to take chances, have hands on, and do things myself). But I have some basic plans and now it's a matter of listing the minutia of details.

I keep pouring over the details, correcting, and adding. Thinking some things should be omitted while prioritizing others to the front of the list. I've also become somewhat a scrounger, picking up things that can be used in the design.... such as a small lighthouse light.

Another design idea is from a fellow up in northern Canada that uses a process where the fireplace block is interwoven with hollow tubes. As the fire heats the stone, it's transferred to the pipes, which have low velocity forces air running through them, under the floor, and on the opposite side of the room. The effect is that 42% of the heat waste in the bricks and morter is transferred to heating a cold floor and registers.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to see some movement in the real estate. Present forecasts by the gov say we have bottomed out and on the rise, but most small banks and lending institutions are saying 2010 will be a rough year, and we may see the commercial side of real estate tank in May-June.

So..... until I find something at a reasonable price, I'm making notes, and putting ideas down on paper, so when the time is right I have everything planned.

Darn good idea about the fireplace VO. When I was a child back in the dinosaur age, I used to spend a lot of time at a place called Bridal Falls. It was a huge three story lodge, made entirely out of logs, and it was out in the middle of nowhere, and even then, you had to go some to get there! Anyway, there was a massive fireplace in the lobby. The chimney from that fireplace went up through the middle of the three stories, and the bricks got very warm all the way up those three stories. I never remembered being cold there, even when there was five feet of snow outside. It was a wonderful place!

With all those logs, and assuming they did logs and interior wood slats with insulation, it probably had an R-45 or better rating. Some of the construction they do with logs is amazing.

No wood slats or insulation VO. Logs - just logs, with some mortar. The place was built back in the twenties... NO, I wasn't at the opening!!!

Understood. Still, that is probably 14 to 16" of wood mass, and that's got to be better than siding and drywall.

That's absolutely correct VO. Those logs were pretty big! It puts drywall, isulation and siding to shame. Sadly, the original lodge burned down. Stupid ignorant new owners 'fudged' around with it, trying to 'make it better'!!!
