    Book Author

This came into the newsroom today. Unfortunately, the guy didn't leave any contact info, which is the usual way to do a press release. Maybe if people think this guy is good enough, we could track him down and suggest him as a guest on C2CAM?

Whistleblower Exposes Consumer Swindling in $650 Billion Industry, Costing EVERY Family up to $400 Every Month

Transportation insider Paul Todd of Augusta GA has written a scathing new exposé called "Industry of Thieves", fingering freight brokers as villains of the U. S. economy because they cost each and every American consumer an additional $100 to $400 per month to pay for goods, products, and services needed for daily living. In Industry of Thieves, published by Rose Dog Books, Todd discloses how both businesses and drivers are exploited by freight brokers and agents who mark up the costs of transportation by 20 to 60 percent for the sole purpose of enriching themselves. Having no real options, businesses then pass on the inflated prices to American consumers, thereby decreasing the amount of money available to them for paying mortgages, health care costs, and other vital obligations.

Decades ago the U.S. government deregulated the transportation industry with the hope that shipping costs would decrease. Competition was thought to be the factor that would cause shippers to fight to gain customers by providing better service at lower prices. Deregulation of the industry did work, according to Todd, but prices increased because of the greed of a small group of intermediaries, freight brokers and freight agents, who find a truck to haul freight for a business or find a business in need of hauling for a trucker. These companies operate without rules or regulation and in the end take too much off the gross so that consumers of goods and services are penalized. Todd compares these broker and agents to the scions of the financial industry, which was not adequately regulated for the last several decades. This tragic failure to regulate the terms under which banks and brokerage houses operated led to the worldwide banking and financial collapse that triggered our current severe economic recession.

The book, Industry of Thieves details that freight brokers are unregulated in a 650 billion dollar industry, and since no regulatory mechanism exists, freight brokers are swindling consumers, businesses, and truckers out of billions each year. The author details how FEMA pays freight brokers and carriers with broker authority, thousands per truckload to freight brokers to arrange the delivery of relief for victims of natural disasters, but instead freight brokers intentionally delay shipments to maximize their profits despite citizens are in dire need, i.e. Katrina. The author questions, "How many lives have we lost for their greed and how long will we continue to let them get by with this...?" "Truckers deliver water, diapers, insulin, food, tampons, baby formula, etc. to victims, and delaying these shipments, if even for five hours for profit(s), is unjustifiable, and inflicts preventable suffering. We cannot control Mother Nature, but we can regulate freight brokers."

The author claims every family can save up to $400 every month with his free solution(s) and exposes how every time one purchases a car, a home, a taco, or a magazine a freight broker profits thousands of dollars through dubious charges that are unknowingly passed to consumers commonly known as "transportation costs" or "shipping and handling." According to the author, freight brokers use the same tactic(s) with the US Postal Service, which partly explains why postage continues to increase and why the USPS cannot be competitive with their private counter parts.

Most do not know this greedy industry even exists, but directly affects the stability of our entire economy. Imagine selling a house and the real estate broker sold it for two hundred thousand more than what they told you it sold for, and kept those profits for themselves... we would be paying a million bucks for a one bedroom home. That is exactly what freight brokers are doing to American families and businesses and this increases the retail price of everything we purchase up to 50 percent. The author's simple solution can change all of this and save families and businesses money and help secure/create jobs across the nation and does not require expanded government or cost the taxpayers a dime.

Well, as someone with a business, and who ships across the country, I can attest to the fact that shipping costs are killing my business. The reason for the huge price increases they say, is 'gas'. I don't know. I do know that shipping adds unbelievable costs to products though!

And I can only expect it to get worse. BTW, Judee, do you do business with "Brown". Our UPS rep says that unless we get them all our shipping (we use Fed-X and others), that they will stop daily pickups and we'll have to call each time there is a pickup.

Yup, I use 'Big Brown'. So far I haven't had any threats, but I have no doubts that they will come at some point. I don't ship by any other shipper though. I know UPS began loosing money when Fed-X (non union) started competing with them. The big union bosses aren't happy now, because their revenues are down, and they control massive amounts of money.

I'm surprised that Brown is doing this only because when DHL/Airborne went out, UPS picked up more business. I suspect they are hurting so they are trying to get what they can while they can.

Simple solution would be to let illegal humons and their trucks take over, they aren't as greedy.

Personally Div, I'd be happy if we all went back to horse and buggy - honestly!
