IW Predictions for 2010

Thanks to Had for reminding me of a premonition I've been having and will post here as a Prediction:

As things get worse, people who know how to really cook, not just pop something from freezer to microwave but who knows how to turn things like rice, beans, veggies and other staple foods into delicious meals, will be highly sought after. Worth their weight in gold.
A lot of hungry people who may have stored away a ton of dry beans without a clue what to do with them will hire (via barter or trade) folks like us who know how to cook.

Speaking of food ... about this same time of year our Prophet (I'm Mormon) made a decree that EVERY Mormon, from Families to single folks, WILL have at least 3 months of food storage by the end of 2009. It was incumbant on each Bishop to make it happen especially for poor folks like me. So, thanks to some generous donations I have 20+ boxes, each holding 6 one gallon cans, of rice, beans, flour, sugar, dried apple slices, dried onions, macaroni, quick oats and hard red wheat. I just have to get a grinder for the hard red wheat. And yes I am a cook who knows how to turn that into some mighty yummy meals.
I share this only because I have a strong feeling that the Church Leadership knows something...

You know Mary, it stuns me to think that so many younger males and females don't have a clue what to do in the kitchen, other than to open the fridge to find food and drink! I'm with you. I can take the simplest things and make gourmet meals. I think today, younger people believe that food always came in white paper bags with grease on the bottom!

Oh come on, Judee! You would be completely amazed by the people I work with -- we have a lot of potlucks, and people bring in the most incredible homecooked food -- a lot of them are in their 20's.

Sorry Muse... I didn't say all younger people! But a good majority only know how to heat soup, make toast, pour milk over cereal, heat prepared frozen food in an over, or go to a restaurant or fast food joint.

Trains

President Obama has announced a multibillion-dollar investment in high-speed railroads that could travel as fast as 200 miles per hour. Could high-speed rail become America's new Eisenhower Interstate, criss-crossing the nation and whisking us from Baton Rouge to Bethesda in mere hours? And does America have the technology and the know-how to build such a system?

"The talent is here in the U.S. to build high-speed rail networks," says Thomas D. Simpson, executive director of Washington D.C.'s Railway Supply Institute. "All we've ever needed is the wherewithal to do it. And 8 billion is going to get us started."

A number of years ago we had a pet rat. He was large, white with a cream collar and black eyes. He was extremely clean, spending hours washing himself. Talk about intelligent! "Rat's Nest" should be considered a compliment. His cage was impeccable. Kept his food in one corner, his "potty" in another, slept in the middle. Never kicked his shred bedding out of the cage.
In fact he was easier to train than a dog. YES I let him run free in the house from time to time and he ALWAYS came to me when called!
Yes germ laden fleas are on rats, those same fleas are on feral cats and dogs! But a domesticated Rat is very clean and a joy to own!

1. The shoe will drop. The stock market will take another dive as investors in the commercial real estate market start to feel the crunch and need to bail, leaving the banks holding the bag. This will be hard on many, but it's the cleaning that needs to take place in order to get to recovery. the silver lining is to watch where the money goes. Watch for trends, and things that people gravitate to. This is where to invest.
   
   
2. I think we may possibly see an escalation of hostilities, which will ultimately pit several counties against each other in the third or closer to the fourth quarter 2010. This "war" will start as the result of two nations aggression, (possibly Israel and Iran), and then friends of each will jump in to help. This war may be more defined and publicly bloody, as opposed to the gorilla wars we face today.
   
   
3. The 2010 Olympics will have a few surprises, including a very young participant who will win Gold. how about that Chinese Gymnist....wasn't she disqualified recently for being under age?
   
   
4. Apple, who has been to the forefront with innovative ideas in electronics will come up with a Kindle like device. They will also feature new devices upgrading the iPod experience for music handling. The iPad
   
   
5. Social media will be the the buzz word, and we'll see the lines of conventional "movie production" being blurred by many startups involving friends and family. In 2010 content will be in the hands of the users, and restrictions will start to fall to the way. We may see Usenet coming back into vogue.
   

I have to think, but there are a few more. I need to clear my head a little more.... perhaps on the second week of vacation.

We will see the start of the fall of commercial real estate - which will result in making the economy MUCH worse, within the first quarter of 2010. We'll see nationwide closures of small, independant retailers first and foremost. Several national chains that specialize in one or two items only - IE clothing -book stores - card shops - sports shops- will be affected. This is going to leave broad streets and shopping malls empty. Crime will increase in these areas. The economy will find itself increasingly dependant on large retail chains, such as walmart, sams, costco, ect.
At home businesses that sell over the internet will become an option for growth.

My sense is that 2010 will be a real roller coaster.

Ding Ding Ding. Look at Detroit. I don't recall seeing so many ads before for on line "Home Business" run via your computer. Small Shops all over are closing.
