    I Love Poetry!

Hey guys! Alpha and I were talking in another thread, and we got to thinking about poetry. I've been reading a lot of poetry lately, and thought it would be fun if we could share our favorite poems. So please, post the ones you love the most here!

I know we also have some very gifted poets here on the IW, and it would be wonderful to read what they have created.

I'll start, with a favorite from childhood.

    George
Who Played With A Dangerous Toy, And Suffered A Catastrophe Of Considerable Dimensions

    When George's Grandmamma was told
That George had been as good as gold,
    She promised in the afternoon
To buy him an Immense BALLOON.
And so she did; but when it came,
It got into the candle flame,
And being of a dangerous sort
    Exploded with a loud report!
The lights went out! The windows broke!
The room was filled with reeking smoke.
And in the darkness shrieks and yells
    Were mingled with electric bells,
    And falling masonry and groans,
And crunching, as of broken bones,
And dreadful shrieks, when, worst of all,
The house itself began to fall!
It tottered, shuddering to and fro,
Then crashed into the street below-
Which happened to be Savile Row.

When help arrived, among the dead
    Were Cousin Mary, Little Fred,
The Footmen (both of them), the Groom,
The man that cleaned the Billiard-Room,
The Chaplain, and the Still-Room Maid.
    And I am dreadfully afraid
    That Monsieur Champignon, the Chef,
    Will now be permanently deaf-
    And both his aides are much the same;
While George, who was in part to blame,
Received, you will regret to hear,
A nasty lump behind the ear.

    Moral:
The moral is that little boys
Should not be given dangerous toys.

Aw hell, I have no idea! But I know he was born sometime in the 1870's. I'd "Google" it, but I'm lazy right now!

So Judee, when are you going to post some of your stuff? Eh?

No it doesn't rock, but it's always 'from the heart'. I write 'simple' poetry... I tried to find one that wouldn't be too embarrassing...

    THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL

It is a feeling in your soul; it warms you to your core
You know you'll never have enough, and always want for more
It comforts you in dead of night, and wraps you in its flame
You wake each morning filled with joy; you'll never be the same

The gift of it is very rare - worth more than all the gold
For gold cannot give comfort, when years have turned you old
God's gift to man and woman, is a priceless thing for sure
For with this gift inside of you, you never will be poor

Should times get rough and turbulent, this gift will keep you strong
Within its glow sweet refuge waits, to carry you along
You'll never be alone, no matter where on earth you are
You carry it inside of you - it never will be far

Its precious fire ignites your world, on the darkest days
In troubled times it's priceless light, turns scorn to highest praise
It elevates you far above, the sadness of the crowd
You see the longing in their eyes; it makes you feel so proud

God gave the gift of love to us, so we could walk in joy
And if all would use this gift, all darkness we'd destroy
This sacred gift he gave to us, was meant for us to share
And if we do, we'll always know, that God is surely there

There never will be riches, like love in our true ones eyes
For this gift he gave his children, is worth more than any prize
That man should love a woman, and woman should love a man
And those that seek this miracle, are part of God's great plan

    (Judee)

    I Remembered

There never was a mood of mine,
Gay or heart-broken, luminous or dull,
But you could ease me of its fever
And give it back to me more beautiful.

In many another soul I broke the bread,
And drank the wine and played the happy guest,
    But I was lonely, I remembered you;
The heart belongs to him who knew it best.

    ~Sara Teasdale

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.
