    The Sun & Reception

As many of you know, the sun has awoke with some solar flairs. The result is radio communications are changing. This message was posted on the radio broadcast list.

"Gotta love that the Sun s waking up...

Au now being heard along the MN, MI, WI, etc., tier of states. And, it will only get better as the coming months pass."

Suppose you live in St Louis, what will this mean? Most likely the stations from Chicago will suffer signal problems, while stations from the south will be enhanced to the point where you might hear South America.

For us "hams" it will mean the possibility that I can talk to Hawaii, Guam and points beyond with just a few watts of power!

FM won't be affected, because it's typically a "line of sight" type of transmission. You might get some distance in April or August when there is a chance of tropospheric ducting. See Bill Hepburn's wonderful web site on predicting this.

AM, on the other hand, is enhanced by what they call auroral conditions. For me, there is a station in Louisville on 840 that I can normally hear, and Detroit is on 760. When you have these conditions, the station from Detroit will get weak, and the station from Louisville will be overtaken by signals way south, such as Brazil.

This is the fun of radio!!

If I recall, you're in AK? In your case, when these conditions prevail, you might get Mexico or southern California.

In the 1960's when I was a teenager, living in Pittsburgh PA, I could pick up WLS out of Chicago at night! Even way back then I would lay awake at night listening to the radio. OH and there was an AM Station out of New York I could sometimes pick up!

Yep, WLS-890 and WCFL-1000 were popular where I lived.

In NY, it may have been WMCA-570, WABC-770, or WINS/WMGM-1010 which were the pop music stations.

Were you in Pbgh in the late 60s and listened to 1360? If so, remember "Jeff Christy"?

Yeah! WABC out of New York. I think the only local AM Station I ever listened to was KDKA and I sure don't remember the number. The name Jeff Christy doesn't ring a bell.
    Thanks!

Yep, WABC with Dan Ingram, Herb Oscar Anderson, Roby Young..... I have some tapes around here of those guys. They are fun to listen to.

"Jeff Christy" was on WIXZ in McKeesport(sp?) PA, which I think was 1360. It was a rock and roll station that competed with 1410 KQV. Jeff Christy was the guys "air name", but later he dropped that and used his real name on the radio, and you know him as Rush Limbaugh.

Jeff Christy, JC, oh "my word". "I have heard the way, and the way is true, for I have listened, with all my heart, to 'JC', lo and behold, have you?" Red-letter moments from the bowels of ignorance, pre-meditated ignorance. That's our JC, ol' Flush Bimbo himself -- Satan incarnate.

I grew up in LA and it was always fun to hear the Wolfman coming from that "flamethrower" station in Mexico!

I remember Wolfman Jack way back when too, I lived in Del Rio, Texas when he was working just a few miles away in Mexico. When we moved from Texas we could still hear him most anywhere in the country we went, before syndication.
