I presented information that, if correct, may have been something someone may have wanteed to know in making their shopping chocies - sigh, if only it had been the right information about the right company.

Boycotting in general is a controversial subject. I would never presume to tell anyone they should or should not partake in one. But I see nothing wrong with providing information for someone to make that choice. First, you may or may not support the cause. Second, even if you support the cause, you may not feel a boycott is the proper way to express your opinion. I believe in them, but I also understand why others don't. For me, it just seems counterproductive to shop at a place that wants to use the money I GIVE THEM to lobby against my civil rights. That is why I don't shop at the Salvation army - ahem

    Ok, 'nuff said.
I hear you,,,I just found out that Honeywell (a major weopons manufacturer) makes Fram air/oil filters and prestone antifreeze.
I don't know how much of a difference it would make, but, it would be nice to know all the domestic products some of these big military industrial complex manufacturers make, so as to make an informed choice and not buy them.
Bektel, Haloburton, Allied Signal, Honeywell, General Dynamics,Mcdonall Douglas, Boeing,
Is this a practical application of what your talking about,,,or,,,,is it being unpatriotic due to the fact that these are american companies and there fore,,,,your putting Americans out of work?

aaradia, I had no idea that Goodwill donates to anti-gay organizations. If so, that doesn't sound like a wise decision for them to make.
goodwill is a for profit organization that takes donated items and marks them up in price..caution when buying there...

As far as I am concerned, No one is obligated to spend money on any organization they don't want to- Period. end of sentence.

To tell someone they have to spend money where they don't want to is what is very unAmerican IMO. The whole arguement some use about putting people out of work is one I don't agree with personally. We are a captialist free society. We get to vote with our money. I may disagree with a boycott, then I get to go out of my way and buy something from that company and vote with my money that way. Some boycotts fail in just such a manner.

But there are so many big companies that have their hands in so very many products, it is almost impossible to figure it out sometimes.

I've shopped at Goodwill, Sally Ann (Salvation Army) and Value Village.

As I understand it, Value Village's claim to fame is that they buy used clothing and items from various organizations, thereby "helpling" them. They also take donations of items.

Goodwill takes donations, but I don't know where their profit goes.

Sally Ann takes donations and also sells the surplus to various other places. They also arrange, through various agencies, to help those in need.

I much prefer to shop at Sally Ann because they are pretty much on the front lines to help people during disasters, personal and otherwise, more so than any other organization... and their prices are more reasonable compared to the other two mentioned. However, I like poking around at all three because you never know what you can find there. I like flee markets and garage sales too. I don't ask those in control what their political views are - people are people. There are other ways of fighting for justice and equality IMO.

I make sure that any "good stuff" I have to give away, is dropped off at the Sally Ann. What they do with it is their concern but I know that if there's money to be made from it, it will go to them and they will put it to good use.

I'm equally disillusioned and disappointed too. I mean, as a single guy here, I don't stand a chance of ever having equal civil rights either .. unless I am doing it to someone too? I'd offer some sympathy, but I guess we're both stuck in the same boat, huh?! So sad for us.
