Thanks Alpha, it must be a "guy thing" because I have a hard time impressing the ladies with the garage, they just dont seem to care. hehe

Yes, Scout 800b - 1971. Twenty year labor of love. Hubcaps are spares for my daily ride - 1979 240D 4spd Mercedes multi fuel ( currently running on waste veggie oil ).

Toolbox bought on craigslist for $75, fully stocked! When I went to pick it up, the fellow turned out to be a pack-rat with a penchant for toolboxes. His entire house was *literally* full of toolboxes of all sorts, all sizes. This is one we pulled out of his kitchen area. His wife was furious about the toolboxes - said they had to go. I gave him my number, as he had some vintage stuff in there. I think I saw a '40's era k-series snap-on roller cabinet in the restroom - I'd love that...

Fortunately I already had the tools etc. The red trim are 8ft firring strips which only sell for 79 cents a piece. I did all the work alone, well me and the ladder. I can talk garages all day but will stop for now.
That is the way to do it, I built my work bench last year with scraps the previous owner had left in the garage when we moved in. I had no tools, so invested in circular saw, orbital sander etc... Basically I want to get the nastiest parts of my woodworking done (stripping all my wood windows, 32 of them and finishing to bare wood, plus re-caulking and re-seating all the panes, 8 per window), then I want to turn it into an insulated garage (I can't use it from december to april basically at the moment). Luckily we have a crappy car so we don't park it in there

I am going to be trolling antique shops for old hand tools. I want to be able to to cabinetry with the real old-school tools. When my Dad was teaching me woodworking he only used to let me use the hand drill, the hand planes, etc until I got old enough for power tools, so I still love the feel and idea of doing it by hand.

Yep, I like old hand tools, I would buy them up myself. I am a bit of a "wannabe" wood worker. This is my table saw, it is on a lift system with wheels so I can roll it around, it also has a heavy cast iron top. I would like to start build birdhouse etc, just some simple relaxing projects but it seems I am always having to work on stuff that has to be done instead.

I would love to buy up tool boxes from a guy like that, but unfortunately I absolutely do not have the room for anymore. I would probably buy a few anyway.

Did IH build everything on the Scout? Were they affiliated with any other car manufacturers? are any parts interchangeable with other manufacturers?

IH had their own engines - they look normal on the outside, but mechanically are very innovative. For instance, my Scout has a 304 V8. It has no timing chain, instead, it sports a factory reverse ground cam, and positive timing via two gears (one on the cam, one on the crank. So it's a factory gear drive - with no idler gears ( idler gears weaken the gear train). The engines were purposely low compression, and built to 'loose' tolerance - which results in burning oil, but long life. Of course, this is forever mis-construed as "poor craftsmanship", but it's just the opposite. The Scout was not designed on a theory of 'planned obsolescence'. I have repaired it over the years in startlingly crude ways, and it never complained.

The transmissions were usually sourced and ended up being *roughly* interchangeable with Jeep stuff - the later automatics were torqueflight 727, same with the transfer cases (Dana). In the mid-seventies a Scout II could be had with a Nissan Diesel - today, I routinely see these engines with 3-4 hundred thousand miles on them. The axles were also Dana (27/44 on mine).

They have a hand made look to them (at least the Scout 80/800 series). And since IH was at one time the largest machine manufacturer in the worls, they had a huge hardware division. The result is the each bolt on the vehicle has an IH logo on the head.

Divesting of the cars these days, and moving in new directions in my garage - how about you Thirsty - what kind of projects do you have in mind for that garage of yours?

    Thanks for asking.

That is interesting reading Squidink. I had a friend in the 80's who drove a IH pick up , he called it his "ole binder". I remember really liking that ole truck.

As far as my projects? I am a bit of a scatter brain and my interests are many but my accomplishments are few hehe.

Right now I guess the two most interesting toys I own are a 69 Impala convertible and a 02 KTM 300 dirtbike which I find myself to be too old and scared to ride effectively although I still try.

My Impala is a driver, very old semi-restoration, the paint is faded and thin but all original with a 350-300hp and turbo 350 trans. I drive it anyplace, take the kids fishing etc. and I dont worry about the occasional nick or scratch. Here are a few pics.
That is not a oil stain but an old Army blanket under the car I use for a "diaper" hehe, she leaks a little tranny fluid out the front seal.

You are torturing me! My dream is to restore an Impala! It is my favorite car. I had a '77 way back with the 305 in it, I ripped the frame apart doing dumb things.

Yea! Impalas are good ole cars IMO. I actually have owned this one for almost 15 yrs. I bought it off my neighbor who was about to get divorced. I really wasn't looking for an old car but I liked it and figured he would possibly ask for it back after his divorce was final. Well he ended up buying a Corvette and I guess the Impala became mine for good. This car was undercoated from the dealer and the frame is totally rust free , in fact aside from a little bubbling around the rear fender moulding there is no rust.
