    Question Need computer help!

    I aquired a home built computer from a friend that someone else made . I could get the computer to boot in safe mode but not normal mode. I decided to format the hard drive. I attempted to make a boot disk, but it wouldn't work because i asked for the OS disk. I didn't have it. I formatted the hard drive and used a boot disk from an old laptop that had the same OS. Man did I screw up! The computer booted up, but lost the cd-rom driver. The boot disk I used only had the drivers for the specific laptop. I created another boot disk (win 98) from a link on the web, but it didn't work. The computer will only boot with the laptop disk. What should I do?

    The computer had Win 98 as the OS. I have an OS disk, but I cant use the cd-rom.

    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Thats a good one. Can you go to the CD-Rom Manufacturers website and download the appropiate driver to accress your Rom? Either that or maybe post your CD-Rom Specs here and maybe one of our members will have the driver you need and can E-mail or transfer it to you.

    Grasping at straws here...

    There is a generic CDROM DOS driver (OAK) that works for all IDE CDROM and DVDROM drives I've tried - is that what you need, a DOS/bootdisk CDROM driver?

    Here's what I have in CONFIG.SYS for a DOS boot disk. The last 2 lines are the CDROM driver and DOS CDROM support, I have it setup to assign CDROMs starting at drive R: and it auto-detects the two drives I have (DVD-ROM, DVD-RW):

    DOS=high,noumb,noauto
    LASTDRIVE=Z
    BUFFERS=20
    FILES=50
    DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS S03
    DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:CD1
    INSTALL=MSCDEX.EXE /D:CD1 /L:R /M:4 /V

    will fix you up...

    All your bootdisk needs will be satisfied here... http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

    May I humbly suggest NOT installing the worst buggiest OS ever made (well, other than winME) ? You would be far better off with something like Knoppix http://knoppix.net or at worst windows 2000.

    I can pretty much guarantee you that knoppix will work flawlessly, will be far faster than any windows you could get, and is much oh so much prettier and more stable.

    Thanks for the help guys. I tried again, but the only disk that the system will boo off of is the laptop disk. I made a boot disk off of bootdisk.com, but it wouldn't work either. it gives me a "invalid system disk" error. I guess I'll take the dumb thing to the local computer shop next week. Maybe they can fix it.

    Try going into your BIOS and turning the Boot from CD back on.

    You probably have some wierd BIOS installed that holds tools for your laptop... Try hitting either F12 or F1 when initial bootup screen comes up and see if it offers to let you boot from something else...

    Listen, PM me, and I will help you walk through it....
