New Brunswick town plagued for weeks by ‘earthquake swarm’ — and no one knows why

    Joe O'Connor Apr 17, 2012

McAdam, New Brunswick, has been struck by over 35 minor tremours — called an “earthquake swarm” — in the past five weeks.

Springtime in McAdam, a tiny village in southwestern New Brunswick not far from the Maine border, is like springtime in most other parts of Canada. Locals chatter about the NHL playoffs, the garden they are planting, the grass that needs to be cut, the fish they can’t wait to catch and the cottage they can’t wait to get to, once the warm weather really settles in.

Lately, however, an interloper has elbowed its way into the community’s daily dialogue. Pushing aside the playoffs. Pushing its way to the very top of the talking points.

“Everybody is talking about the earthquakes,” says David Blair, a retired science teacher and lifetime McAdam resident from his home on Old Harvey Road, just east of downtown.

    Courtesy of David Blair

Retired science teacher David Blair with a seismograph set up in his basement. “Everybody is talking about the earthquakes,” he says.

“You’ll be out and about and people will say, ‘Did you feel the one last night, or did you feel the one this morning? Some people will say yes, others might say no. It really depends on what you are doing.’

“If you are quiet at home and there is not a lot of noise you are probably going to feel or hear it. But if you are banging around, or if the grandkids are banging around, you sometimes won’t know if it’s the kids — or if it was an earthquake — they are about the same magnitude, I guess.”

Residents were initially rattled awake at 1:40 a.m. on March 10 by a 2.4-magnitude earthquake that was followed three minutes later by a 1.4-magnitude aftershock. People described hearing what sounded like an explosion. Pictures fell off walls. Window panes rattled. Floorboards creaked and groaned. Some houses even shook, while locals, initially, felt a surge of panic that eased, somewhat, by morning with the realization that a bomb had not gone off but a small earthquake had.

Three days later: two more earthquakes. And in the five weeks since there have been 35 additional shakes, a steady tide of minor tremours that is a popular topic of conversation among villagers and a seismic anomaly that scientists can’t entirely explain.

“What is happening in McAdam is something called an earthquake swarm,” says Stephen Halchuk, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada. “It is a series of earthquakes, which is rare. But what is particularly unusual about what is happening in McAdam is that it is basically happening directly beneath the village — and at a depth of less than one kilometre.

“When these earthquake swarms occur they are typically in a remote area where nobody feels them.”

Mr. Halchuk can’t say how long the earthquakes will continue for, or if a big one, capable of causing serious property damage and endangering lives, could be lurking among all the little ones.

“We can never say never,” he says. “I wouldn’t rule out a very large event occurring but, typically, in situations like this, the magnitude of the earthquakes is modest and doesn’t increase.”

Researchers from the University of New Brunswick addressed community members at an atypical town hall meeting Monday night, answering questions and assuaging lingering fears. One working theory they have to explain the quakes is an early spring thaw. A rapid change in groundwater levels could, perhaps, be causing the underlying rocks to slip and stress, unleashing the multiple shocks.

‘You sometimes won’t know if it’s the kids or if it was an earthquake’

Moodus, Connecticut, is another tiny town with an earthquake problem, one dating back hundreds of years and which, today, is the basis of the local high school’s team name: The Noises. The noises in McAdam, meanwhile, have been described by the locals as a loud “bang,” a “boom,” “like dynamite being blown up,” and “a loud thud, like somebody falling out of bed.”

Natural Resources and UNB have installed three seismographs in the village to monitor the situation and to flesh out their working hypotheses. One of the machines is in David Blair’s basement.

“They are not paying me for it,” he says, laughing. “It’s just volunteer. The government doesn’t have any money except to pay its MPs and MLAs.”

Connie Klein is the village clerk. She doesn’t really like talking to the media, or the academics, because she doesn’t really know what to say. But, when she does talk, she explains how the quakes, to her, have become another noise — in her otherwise tranquil village — a sharp “bang” as though someone were upstairs in her house and dropped an encyclopedia on the floor while she was downstairs washing the dishes.

“You might jump for a second,” she says.

But then you get on with your day.

And Tuesday, in McAdam, was one for the ages. The sun was blasting hot and talk of the unusual April weather — and not whether the Earth was about to split open and swallow the place whole — was on everybody’s lips.

“It has been really nice here,” Ms. Klein says. “In fact, it’s actually too hot.”

These bangs and booms are very strange. The differ quite a bit from the other strange noises heard around the planet.

Someone surely must know what they are and they aren't' telling

Wonder if LMH will get into this again Thursday April 26, 2012 on Coast?

Unexplained Sounds/Booms Now Being Reported In Central Ohio

    Wednesday, April 25, 2012 11:45

All I can say is, what the hell is going on in our atmosphere?

This happened on Thursday, April 12, 2012...This couldn't be a sound from a jet since it lasted for more than 45 seconds, and Rocky Van Brimmer claimed it happened for more than 2-3 mins long. Plus, the FAA didn't claim responsibility to any aircraft in the area that would cause this.

Here are some of the comments from residents in Central Ohio...

"This was unlike anything I've ever heard. Deep, thundering and non-directional. It wasn't an aircraft. My best guess is an astroid passing in the upper atmosphere with fragments breaking up and exploding as they entered."

"This has been going on in several states. The latest was in Wisconsin. There has been recordings of this sound in Illinois, Florida, and Indiana. Specialists in different areas have been called in and haven't been able to determine the source of the sound."

"Another reason for such a sound like this is that as the planets align the portal to the next dimensions are opening so that the spirits stuck here can now proceed forward with their travels. As the alignment happens certain areas of the plant will hear a large booming sound do the vacuum cause by the void in the open gateway. When the moon is illuminated and the night is clear, with a pair of high powered 3D glasses you will be able witness the spirits begin there travels. The best place to be to see this is your local graveyard. It will look like the northern lights around the tombstones. I have been watching out my back window on clear nights."

Dera mentioned in the TO a few nights ago that LMH also did an interview with Whitley Strieber on Dreamland this week. Thanks Dera!!

Have you listened to it yet Dera? I'm listening right now and it's a pretty good one; 1 hour in length.

Both Linda and Whitley are concluding that they think these strange sounds are likely not of this world and that they feel it might be something like a war between some ET factions that the US, Canadian and British...if not more countries are aware of.

If interested, catch the interview while you can. Whitley only has free streaming for his most recent show, so when the next one is put up, you won't be able to hear it.

    Unexplained Explosions Now Worldwide

They started in Clintonville, Wisconsin. They were dismissed as a local phenomenon. But they have now spread to 12 states, the United Kingdom and possibly Lithuania. They are loud, often metallic-sounding explosions of unknown origin. In the UK, a powerful explosion heard over most of southern England was explained as a sonic boom caused when two Typhoon jets were scrambled in response to an as-yet unexplained 'rare' emergency signal that came from a small helicopter hovering over Bath. The two jets were observed circling the helicopter. One witness reported a silver disk in the area. Meanwhile, unexplained explosions have now been heard both from the air and from underground in 12 states in the United States. They have nothing to do with fracking and are not a new earthquake-related geologic phenomenon.

Listen as Whitley Strieber and Linda Moulton Howe discuss this bizarre phenomenon, and Linda offers reports from many eyewitnesses.

    Update from Linda Moulton Howe:

More Unexplained Booms in Boston and Beyond

Return to Boom Updates Parts 1 - 3.

Also: April 26, 2012 North America and England.

May 1, 2012 Boston, Massachusetts, and Tacoma, Washington region - Earthfiles has received many more strange boom reports since reporting on April 26, 2012, about the bizarre and still-unexplained metallic, jolting booms throughout North America and abroad, that have persisted since February 2012. Recently a series of boom phenomena all happening between April 12 and 14, ranged from Bath, England; to central Ohio; to Tacoma, Washington; to San Diego County, California; to Columbia, Missouri. Below emails begin with booms and some light flashes in the Boston, Massachusetts, region on April 27 and 29, 2012, followed by more reports from the Tacoma, Washington, region that include strange military jet and helicopter maneuvers west of reported booms.

"Unexplained sounds, flashes spark rumors in Roslindale"

May 1, 2012 by Steve Annear, Boston Metro

This May 1st email came from an environmental engineer who works in Boston waste site cleanup and sent the Boston Metro news story about “unexplained sounds and flashes of light” on Friday, April 27, and Sunday, April 29, 2012, in the area of Zeller Street near the Fallon Field in Roslindale, a suburb southwest of Boston.

Engineer's May 1, 2012 email: Apparently, this happened over the weekend, but didn’t make it to the local free Boston Metro paper till Tuesday morning, May 1. For the record, we DO have “fault lines” in Mass, lots of them, but we’re not particularly earthquake prone and we do NOT have fracking here.

I also have heard odd noises at times, but they always seem to be “explainable” more or less, or at least, they seem that way:

    (a) Loud heavy traffic and/or airplane noises late at night, even though we aren’t close to any highways per se, there are some busy roads but even then, they were well away from where I was walking. It was about 11 pm, walking home from my bus stop on an otherwise quiet street, it was annoying how “loud” it was but wasn’t a time I was normally out there so didn’t have a comparison at the time, but another walk a few nights later was not nearly as noisy…

    (b) “horn” type sound – most like an ocean buoy of the “whistle” or “horn” type (like very deep, loud blowing air across a bottle sound) which was very noticeable on Washington St. in downtown Boston and which I decided had to be wind through a multistory parking garage – but it was very odd, never heard it before or since.

Subject: More booms April 30th in Kingston, WA, about 10:30 p.m. PDT
    Date: April 30, 2012
    To: earthfiles@earthfiles.com

My husband, mother and I live in Kingston, Washington. We heard the booms the same night as those heard in Lacey, Washington (April 12, 2012). We were inside the house with the t.v. on, and the booms were so loud, we muted the t.v. and listened in awe.

Kingston, Washington, (upper right circle) is north of Tacoma
and Lacey. Residents heard loud booms in Kingston, Puyallup,
and Lacey on the same night of Thursday, April 12, 2012.

Tonight (Apr. 30) at around 10:30 p.m, I was walking my dog outside around the neighborhood and was almost home when I heard 6 more booms--4 evenly spaced, then a few seconds nothing, then a 5th boom, then another few seconds of silence and a 6th boom. It sounds like the same kind of boom as others have reported, like something heavy being hurled into an empty dumpster, or a heavy load of something like (maybe) metal and wood being dropped all at once from a considerable height. It doesn't resemble any sonic boom I've ever heard, or any kind of artillery.

Thanks for taking these reports seriously. I was SO glad to know that we were not the only ones hearing this!

    Date: May 1, 2012

I was very intrigued about the metallic booms in Lacey, Washington, because I too heard a loud boom that shook the whole house on the same evening (April 12, 2012) in Puyallup, WA, which is about 35 miles from Lacey.

Puyallup, Washington (far right circle), is southeast of Tacoma (top circle) not far from
Air Force and Army Joint Base Lewis-McChord (middle circle) between Puyallup
and Lacey, Washington (lower left circle). Tacoma to Lacey is 30 miles.

I was listening to your show this morning (May 1, 2012) about the booms heard in Tacoma on April 12th. I had visited the Coast to Coast AM show and saw that you were doing a show on strange earth booms and decided to check out the article.

What was even stranger however; is that I was out on the Washington coast that weekend namely Pacific Beach (Seabrook) and all day on that Friday the 13th and some the 14th, there was a fighter jet circling around making sonic booms in the sky over and over in the same area.

Seabrook and Pacific Beach (far left circle) are where the Puyallup (far right circle) emailer was on Friday to Saturday, April 13 to 14, 2012, where a fighter jet circled making repeated sonic booms and where a Black Hawk helicopter flew very low back and forth along the beach.

Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Image courtesy Dept. of Defense.

Stranger still, when we went down to the beach there was a Black Hawk helicopter that was flying very low, (maybe only one hundred to two hundred feet in the air) along the beach making several passes. It was so close and so loud that we thought it was going to land over the top of us; it was very surreal. All of the events coinciding with one another and we just kept asking ourselves what was going on? The boom that we heard in Puyallup on April 12th (same night as Lacey series of metallic booms from 9 PM to 3 AM, April 13) was very loud and it sounded like there was an explosion in the basement that shook the whole house. I noticed on your website that some of the booms sounded like someone planted a stick of dynamite right outside of your house and that's what it sounded like to us. I thought maybe the gas water heater or the gas line going into the basement exploded and had my husband go down and check and see what was going on; we couldn't figure out what was the cause but it was very disturbing. I ran upstairs to check on the kids and asked my Mother who was staying with us at the time if she had heard the boom.

She said she also heard it and thought something happened. Like the gentleman in Missouri (Prof. Dinsmore, Earthfiles April 26, 2012 North America and England.) I also checked the news and internet for days trying to find the cause of the sound and nothing was reported. I did not hear a metallic undertone however as it was just quick and distinct and only happened once. We hear things from Fort Lewis all of the time and never anything that sounded this close like it hit our home.

We have been experiencing strange things around here since the fall of 2011, including the horses tearing through an electric fence only to repeat the same behavior the whole evening over and over (that happened only the weekend before this), strange cloud formations that had shapes like I had never seen before and seemed to be moving into some kind of vortex before they were completely gone and it was as if they had never been there. ...............................

UFO OVNI CAUGHT ON FILM MAKING STRANGE TRUMPET SOUNDS OVER HONG KONG?? MAY 2012

This is a video from Tercer Milenio a TV show hosted by Jaime Maussan that documents UFO sightings. I don't know how real this is, it is interesting though. I have been keeping tabs on the strange sounds phenomenon and this is the first time a UFO is involved. Did someone take a UFO film and dub the Strange Sounds over it or is it the real deal?

Here's something that makes sense to me and a big Thank You to my cousin who posted this on FaceBook
STRANGE SOUNDS IN SKY EXPLAINED BY SCIENTISTS
    SATURDAY, 28 JANUARY 2012 09:17
Mr. Khalilov, what is the nature of the unusual very low-pitched sounds reported by a great number of people in different parts of the planet since the summer of 2011? Many call them “The Sound of the Apocalypse”. Information about that comes from all over the world: US, UK, Costa Rica, Russia, Czech Republic, Australia, etc.

We have analyzed records of these sounds and found that most of their spectrum lies within the infrasound range, i.e. is not audible to humans. What people hear is only a small fraction of the actual power of these sounds. They are low-frequency acoustic emissions in the range between 20 and 100 Hz modulated by ultra-low infrasonic waves from 0.1 to 15 Hz. In geophysics, they are called acoustic-gravity waves; they are formed in the upper atmosphere, at the atmosphere-ionosphere boundary in particular. There can be quite a lot of causes why those waves are generated: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, storms, tsunamis, etc. However, the scale of the observed humming sound in terms of both the area covered and its power far exceeds those that can be generated by the above-mentioned phenomena.

In that case, what could be causing this humming in the sky?

In our opinion, the source of such powerful and immense manifestation of acoustic-gravity waves must be very large-scale energy processes. These processes include powerful solar flares and huge energy flows generated by them, rushing towards Earth's surface and destabilizing the magnetosphere, ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Thus, the effects of powerful solar flares: the impact of shock waves in the solar wind, streams of corpuscles and bursts of electromagnetic radiation are the main causes of generation of acoustic-gravitation waves following increased solar activity.

Given the surge in solar activity as manifested itself in the higher number and energy of solar flares since mid-2011, we can assume that there is a high probability of impact of the substantial increase in solar activity on the generation of the unusual humming coming from the sky. It should be pointed out that solar activity began to rise sharply since early 2011, with its amplitude significantly higher than all forecasts given by a number of influential scientific institutions in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile, the observed increase in solar activity is fully consistent with the forecast of the International Committee GEOCHANGE published in the Committee's Report in June 2010. If this growth rate of solar activity continues, its amplitude by the end of 2012 will be higher than the amplitude of 23rd solar cycle, and in 2013-2014 the solar activity will reach its peak the amplitude of which was predicted by us to be 1.5 - 1.7 times higher than the amplitude of the 23rd cycle.

But you said that the cause of the "sky hum" can lie within Earth's core as well, what does it mean?

There is one more possible cause of these sounds and it may lie at the Earth's core. The fact is that the acceleration of the drift of the Earth's north magnetic pole which increased more than fivefold between 1998 and 2003 and is at the same level today points to intensification of energy processes in the Earth's core, since it is processes in the inner and outer core that form the Earth's geomagnetic field. Meanwhile, as we have already reported, on November 15, 2011 all ATROPATENA geophysical stations which record three-dimensional variations of the Earth's gravitational field almost simultaneously registered a powerful gravitational impulse. The stations are deployed in Istanbul, Kiev, Baku, Islamabad and Yogyakarta, with the first and last one being separated by a distance of about 10,000 km. Such a phenomenon is only possible if the source of this emanation is at the Earth's core level. That huge energy release from the Earth's core at the end of the last year was some kind of a start signal indicating the transition of the Earth's internal energy into a new active phase.
Intensification of the energy processes in the Earth's core can modulate the geomagnetic field which, through a chain of physical processes at the ionosphere - atmosphere boundary level, generates acoustic-gravity waves the audible range of which has been heard by people in the form of a frightening low-frequency sound in different parts of our planet.

In both cases, even though the causes of acoustic-gravity waves are of a quite understandable geophysical nature, they are indicative of the expected significant increase in solar activity and the geodynamic activity of our planet. There is no doubt that processes in the core rule the internal energy of our planet, therefore, we should expect by the end of 2012 a sharp rise in strong earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and extreme weather events with peak levels in 2013 - 2014.

Listen as Whitley Strieber and Linda Moulton Howe discuss this bizarre phenomenon, and Linda offers reports from many eyewitnesses.

Coast To Coast AM Feb 23 2012 - Unexplained Sounds

In three half-hour segments on Thursday's show, investigative reporter Linda Moulton Howe discussed the large number of strange and unexplained horn-like sounds filling the air since March 2011 and possible causes. The phenomenon surfaced after a number of videos were uploaded on YouTube from such divergent places as Norway, Costa Rica, Tennessee and Kiev, Ukraine. Recently, Linda interviewed two witnesses in Tennessee, who in separate locations, heard the Kiev-like horn sounds on January 18-19, 2012. One of the witnesses, retired real estate agent Cindy Smith was packing her car for a trip when the air was filled with the Kiev horn sounds coming from every direction. The strange sounds lasted about 30 seconds and left Cindy frightened, wanting to know what happened.

A woman in Topeka, Kansas told Linda she was awakened on September 3, 2011 at her Perry Lake vacation home by the sound of "a television turned on in the distance with voices we could not make out." Yet, as she and her husband discovered, no television was on in their home when the sounds were heard. In January 2012, an Azerbaijan geophysicist named Elchin Khalilov released an article in which he suggested the strange sounds people are hearing are related to "acoustic-gravity waves caused by powerful solar flares and plasma emissions from the sun." However, when Linda interviewed NASA solar physicist David Hathaway he doubted that solar activity could be connected with the sounds.

Linda raised an interesting hypothesis-- "what if some of the strange sounds heard around the world...were part of an American government test of what some have called 'voice of God' weapons?" Around the time of 9-11, there were rumors that the Defense Dept. wanted to try sending directed sound waves into the minds of Middle East terrorists, she noted. Linda also presented a report on the increased number of dolphins stranded and dying in Cape Cod & the New Jersey shore since January 2012. She spoke with marine biologist Trevor Spradlin who found the incidents to be unprecedented and perplexing.
