15 Companies Whose Products Contain ‘Wood Pulp’ Ingredient

shoppingmarket2 210x131 15 Companies Whose Products Contain Wood Pulp IngredientCellulose can be found in popular products ranging from crackers and ice cream to pizza sauce and barbecue sauce. What many do not realize, however, is that cellulose is actually wood pulp. Unable to be digested by humans due to the lack of necessary enzymes needed to break the ingredient down, cellulose has been deemed ‘safe for consumption’ by the FDA.

Cellulose is virgin wood pulp that has been processed and manufactured for different functions, such as its prime use throughout the food supply. Cellulose can be found in products under ingredient listings such as cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and more. Shockingly, the FDA sets no limit on the amount of cellulose that can be used in food products despite the USDA limiting the use of cellulose to 3.5% in meat since fiber in meat products cannot be recognized nutritionally.
Cellulose increasingly popular as cheap filler with no nutritional value

Food manufacturers use cellulose as an extender, meaning it provides structure and reduces breakage. In addition to food, cellulose is used in the creation of plastics, cleaning detergents, welding electrodes, pet litter, automotive brake pads, glue and reinforcing compounds, construction materials, roof coating, asphalt and even emulsion paints, among many other products.

Cellulose is also much cheaper than ‘real’ food ingredients that perform the same jobs and actually add nutritional value to the product. In fact, manufacturers are increasingly adding cellulose to their products to slash costs and fill up their products.

“As commodity prices continue to rally and the cost of imported materials impacts earnings, we expect to see increasing use of surrogate products within food items. Cellulose is certainly in higher demand and we expect this to continue,” Michael A. Yoshikami, chief investment strategist at YCMNet Advisors, told TheStreet.

In fact, some products are now removing as much as 50% of the fat from products such as cookies, biscuits, cakes, and brownies, and adding cellulose in as a filler instead.

It is important to read food labels carefully to avoid any unwanted ingredients, but here are a number of popular products that contain cellulose — mainly to a significant degree:

    Good find Judee

    This is disgusting.

Makes another good case for cooking from scratch and eating as much organic as one is able.

I don't really see a problem with cellulose, and this article doesn't mention any downsides either really.

Cellulose is what makes plants plants. It is the structural agent that makes celery have a shape. It is "fiber" in food stuffs.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulose

Cellulose is the most common organic compound on Earth. About 33% of all plant matter is cellulose
Yes it is used in making paper, because trees have high cellulose content.

Every time you eat an organic vegetable you are eating cellulose. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_fiber

I would worry about how it's processed...

Not sure I want to be eating something that is also used as an ingredient in what is described above.

They aren't putting it in our food because it's good for us, they're putting it in our food to make more money! Moose eat wood cellulose--humans weren't meant to, which is why we can't digest it.

Indigestible fiber has always been a part of humans' diet. We always ate vegetable matter. I understand your point, but in the scope of things, even eating wood products is waaaay better than most of the stuff they add to our food. Cellulose is used in lots of products, just as lard can be used as an industrial lubricant, but it is also in pastry.

It is like the http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html scare - it can be made to sound scary but once you understand what it is they are talking about it becomes slightly more innocuous.

    Cellulose is virgin wood pulp
This is not true. Cellulose is in every plant. It does not come from wood (only). Again, the next veggie you eat will contain cellulose, like it or not, and you won't digest it.

I am not arguing here, there is a point being made that it is being used as filler, but you could level the same accusation at whole wheat bread. Including the whole grain is just "filler" - we can't digest it. However, it does have health benefits: Some good info on dietary fiber here http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09333.html - I bet none of us eat recommended levels of fiber, it is quite hard to do!

I get your point also Project, but if they are using 'processed' wood pulp as stated, then I would question what is used in the processing of it. Also, I object to paying high prices for something I can't even digest being added to my food! You go ahead and eat your wood...

Are you sure he ate pine trees py? I know he ate pine nuts, etc. But anyway, he died before his time... Hmm, maybe you're on to something py. Maybe it was the turpentine in the pine trees that killed him, or the cellulose!

As long as you ate fresh stuff as well you could definitely lose weight eating trees. My bran fiber cereal is pretty much wood twigs from what I can tell lol.
