It's JBW so you know I'll be listening!
OY what a day I had today. Got up earlier than usual, took the bus downtown, wandered down to The Weekend Market held downtown every Saturday and Sunday during the Summer. It's a lot of fun, with food, entertainment on stage, and the entertainment of watching/eavesdropping on the Touristers
There are Native Arts and Crafts made from bone and horn and antler and leather and fur and wood and local stone and feathers: paintings, carvings, jewelry.
And there are wonderful Arts and Crafts made by non-Natives. There's local honey and birch syrup (which, just personal taste, I prefer over maple syrup) and home made baked goods.
Soon there will be Copper River Salmon canned, kippered, smoked and loxed as well as home made jellies, jams, preserves from fresh picked wild berries and rhubarb.
In a month or so fresh veggies will start showing up.
One of my fave booths was open, selling wonderful, fresh herbs, spices, teas, tea blends, sea salt all kinds of wonderful stuff....I bought a little packet each of Gray and Himalayan Pink sea salt. Soon they'll have organic dried rose buds! Oh and they had Fiddle Heads, from the Fiddle Head Fern....they are only fresh and available for a week or so in the spring. But I didn't buy any.
I did buy nearly a pound (!) of fresh, wild Alaskan mushrooms: Shiitake and Oyster. And I bought a packet of these wonderful dried veggies that POOF right up to normal chopped veggie size in your soup or stew and they taste fresh.
Sooooo and anywhoooo when I got home I thawed 3 quarts of my home made stock; 1 of ham stock and 2 of duck stock. In it I've put the mushrooms I chopped up, a packet of those dried veggies and about 2 cups of dried white beans.
Don't ask what Secret Herbs and Spices I put into the stock when I made it!
It'll be good in a few hours and wonderful (if I do say so myself) tomorrow.

These writings look at the hidden meanings and the copycat effect that transform events into "hot death stories" and "celebrity happenings."
