Proposition 37 - The Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act

So which companies are paying big bucks to fight GMO labeling?

Proposition 37, better known as the Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, is set to go to ballot this November in California. The initiative would require labels signifying when a food product contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and items that do include GMO would no longer be allowed to use descriptors such as “all-natural” on food packaging (because they are not).

Both sides of the debate have raised millions for the cause in lead-up to what will be an historic vote with far-reaching ramifications. Well, have you wondered which companies are paying big bucks to fight for GMO against truth in advertising? Check this list out (from KCET.org):

    - Pepsi and Coca-Cola (professional rivals coming together for one cause, like The Avengers of Frankenfood)
    – Nestle
    – Kellogg
    – Hormel
    – Bimbo
    – General Mills
    – ConAgra, the company behind Gulden’s, Jiffy Pop, Swiss Miss, and dozens more
    – Smucker’s has given money as well, which very much contradicts their ad campaign about what simple, rural farm folk who just love fruit they are.

Some of these names may surprise you, most likely do not, but the point is these companies are using top-dollar financial influence to cloud any attempt at transparency with their genetically modified products…

Natural brands betray consumers over GMO labeling: NaturalNews issues boycott of Kashi, Silk, Larabar and more

    Aug. 16, 2012

(NaturalNews) It's time to defeat evil in the food industry and stop the vicious betrayal of consumers by so-called "natural" brands. They're all conspiring right now to funnel millions of dollars into a disinformation campaign to try to defeat ballot measure 37, the "GMO labeling" initiative in California (http://www.naturalnews.com/036833_GMO_labeling_YES_on_37_California.h...).

Effective immediately, NaturalNews is issuing a global boycott on the following brands:

Kashi (owned by Kellogg, which has contributed $612,000 to defeat Proposition 37) - Kashi cereals contain GMOs!

Silk soymilk (owned by the nation's largest dairy, Dean Foods, which has contributed $253,000 to the effort to kill Proposition 37)

Larabar (owned by General Mills, which has contributed $520,000 to defeat proposition 37)

R.W. Knudsen (owned by Smucker, which has contributed $387,000 to defeat proposition 37)

Santa Cruz Organic (also owned by Smucker, which has contributed $387,000 to defeat proposition 37)

Cascadian Farm (owned by General Mills, which has contributed $520,000 to defeat proposition 37)

Muir Glen (also owned by General Mills, which has contributed $520,000 to defeat proposition 37)

Boycott these brands -- the BETRAYORS of the food industry. Help make sure their betrayal of consumers costs them huge market share. Remember: When it comes to evil food companies, if you ignore them (by not buying their toxic products) they will go away.

This is all detailed in a release just issued by the Cornucopia Institute:

Agribusinesses Owning Natural / Organic Brands Betray Customers: Fund Attack on GMO Labeling Proposal in California

Proposition 37, a citizen's initiative on the ballot on November 6 in California, would mandate clear labeling of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients on food packages. It has become a battleground pitting consumer and farmer advocates against multi-billion-dollar agribusiness corporations.

Recent polling indicates almost 70% of citizens support informational labeling. And a flood of new contributions to fight the measure has rolled in from the biotechnology industry and food manufacturers, totaling over $23 million, according to the California Secretary of State. This dwarfs the approximately $3 million contributed by proponents of GE labeling.

"Consumers might be surprised to find out that brands hiding under 'natural' façades are in fact owned by multi-billion-dollar corporations that are contributing bushel baskets of cash to defeating Proposition 37," says Charlotte Vallaeys, Director of Farm and Food Policy at The Cornucopia Institute. (www.cornucopia.org)

Mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food in California is viewed as a watershed event by many industry observers, as many companies will find it logistically or economically difficult to produce foods with labels identifying GE for California while producing a different product line of foods for the rest of the country.

"Just as we've observed in Europe, where labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is mandatory, we fully expect that when given a choice, consumers will choose organic or non-GMO products," said Mark A. Kastel, Codirector of Wisconsin-based Cornucopia. "And the industrial food lobby is fully cognizant of this -- that's why they're fighting like hell against this grassroots effort."

To make it easier for shoppers to identify and support organic brands whose corporate owners support Proposition 37, and avoid buying brands owned by companies that financially contributed to opposing the "Right to Know" campaign, The Cornucopia Institute has developed a guide for consumers. (http://www.cornucopia.org/2012/08/prop37/)

"If the food and biotech industries are so proud of their pervasive genetically manipulated crops, why are they so afraid, and so desperately opposed to labeling it?" asked Arran Stephens, founder of Nature's Path, North America's largest certified organic cereal and granola brand with manufacturing plants in the US and Canada.

Besides Nature's Path, those who have contributed in support of Proposition 37 include venerable organic manufacturers such as Dr. Bronner's, Nutiva and Lundberg rice. These companies are all independently-owned businesses that avoid GMOs and are committed to supporting organic agriculture.

"Food companies are required by law to label 'contains peanuts' if included in their product. People deserve the same for GMOs. Our customers want to know if any product contains GMOs," says John Roulac, founder and CEO of Nutiva, an organic food company.

On the other side, joining Monsanto and the giant food lobby group Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) in donating money to the effort to defeat the ballot initiative, are multi-billion-dollar, multi-national companies including General Mills, Dean Foods, Kellogg and Pepsico. These companies own brands that are misrepresented to consumers as independent, value-driven businesses.

Biotechnology corporations and corporate agribusinesses have collectively donated millions of dollars to defeat Proposition 37. Monsanto alone has donated $4.2 million, while food giants Pepsico and Coca Cola have each donated more than $1 million.

"Consumers are increasingly interested in 'voting with their forks,' and many want to support companies that share their values," says Vallaeys. "But consumers may not realize that many organic and 'natural' brands are owned by the very same corporations that are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars each, or even millions, in an effort to scuttle Proposition 37 in California," she adds.

For example, Kashi is owned by Kellogg, which has contributed $612,000 to defeating Proposition 37. Last year, The Cornucopia Institute published a study, Cereal Crimes (http://www.cornucopia.org/2011/10/na...rganic-cereal/), which revealed that the popular, "natural" Kashi GoLean cereal brand, unbeknownst to its customers, contains genetically engineered ingredients.

In what The Cornucopia Institute characterizes as "creating a façade," nowhere on the Kashi website or packaging is it disclosed that the company is owned by Kellogg, rather than the "small band of passionate people" featured on the Kashi website.

Another example is Silk soymilk, which carries the "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal on its products but is owned by the nation's largest dairy, Dean Foods, which has contributed $253,000 to the effort to kill Prop. 37. Dean Foods also owns the Horizon Organic brand. Both Silk and Horizon profess to consumers that the brands oppose GMOs.

"Talk is cheap," adds Vallaeys. "Consumers should not only know whether there are GMOs in their food, but also whether their hard-earned dollars are supporting companies that then turn around and invest those profits in the effort to sell-out their right to know."

The Cornucopia Institute, which developed the funding guide (http://www.cornucopia.org/2012/08/prop37/), stresses that the organization is not against corporate involvement in organics.

"We welcome corporate involvement in the organic food industry, but only when the parent company subscribes to the values that the organic food movement is based on," says Kastel. "We have a problem with the duplicity of corporations that hide under a 'holier-than-thou' marketing brand and then undermine the very values of the organic movement."

"For example, when Kellogg donates money to the Organic Trade Association, the Kashi brand appears on the OTA website. But when the same company donates to the effort to defeat Proposition 37, Kellogg will do everything in its power to make sure that its Kashi customers, who seek wholesome and natural foods, do not associate the Kashi brand with a corporate contributor to the effort to kill Proposition 37," adds Kastel.

The same is true for the R.W. Knudsen and Santa Cruz Organic brands, owned by Smucker, and the Cascadian Farm, Larabar and Muir Glen brands, owned by General Mills. These corporate brand owners have donated $387,000 and $520,000, respectively, to defeating Proposition 37.

By using Cornucopia's Proposition 37 funding guide, consumers can invest their food dollars in organic and non-GMO companies that are truly committed to supporting sustainable agriculture.

"Hiding the truth about our food is pervasive, unethical, and only done for money," says Michael Potter, CEO of Eden Foods, an organic food manufacturer that financially contributed to support Proposition 37. "Let this [Prop. 37] be the beginning of an end to it."

    Who is supporting GMO labeling?

For the record, those contributing funds to help pass proposition 37 include Nature's Path (my No. 1 favorite cereal company), Dr. Bronner's, Nutiva and Lundberg rice. In the info realm, supporters include Dr. Mercola, the Organic Consumers Association, NaturalNews (through numerous contributions to the IRT), and many others.

NaturalNews is currently in the process of launching its own store and has pledged a percentage of store profits to raise even more funds for protecting food freedom and farm freedom (http://www.naturalnews.com/036817_Natural_News_store_superfoods_shopp...).

Mike Adams, the editor of NaturalNews, continues to call for GMO labeling on national radio, and is a frequent guest and / or host of Coast to Coast AM and the Alex Jones Show, reaching tens of millions of listeners with educational information about GMOs.

I really, really hope that measure 37 goes through. This would set a precedent, and hopefully other states would follow. The power of the media to brainwash people is very powerful though, and piles of money are being poured into the campaign to defeat it. I would like to say I am hopeful, but it's hard to be.

I don't think at this point there is any real way to keep GMOs out of food, it is so mixed in already it is hopeless. It is like letting a rodent loose on an island, once it reproduces once you have basically lost the fight. These genes are in the wild and are cross-pollenating non-GMO crops and non-GMO farmers have no real way of verifying their strains are heirloom 100% or not. The debate over this was important 2 decades ago or more, it is a moot point now - fighting about labeling when the damage is so far progressed.

Don’t celebrate yet, but a grassroots victory against GMO deception is now inevitable

    Mike Adams
    Natural News
    Oct 16, 2012

The battle against genetically modified organisms being secretly engineered into our foods now has only one possible outcome: Victory for the People… and defeat of the corporate quack scientists and the outrageously dishonest and sinister biotech industry that has shoved GMO down our throats for a decade or more.

In terms of victory, I’m not just talking about Proposition 37, although that could very well be a turning point that accelerates the consumer victory. But even if Proposition 37 doesn’t pass, the end of the line for hidden GMOs in our food is fast approaching. The word is out. People are getting informed. There’s absolutely no going back to the era of “GMO ignorance,” and the truth about GMOs causing cancer, infertility, organ damage and other deadly health problems is circulating everywhere.

Even Whole Foods is now teaching its own employees more details about GMO so that they can better answer customer’s questions about GMO.

GMO labeling laws are in the planning stages in several states across the country, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich has already introduced a national GMO labeling law called the Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act, or H.R. 6635.

Monsanto is on the run from activists. Honest doctors and scientists everywhere are waking up and speaking out against GMO. Food retailers like Green PolkaDot Box have already abandoned GMO and they now run an online store that’s virtually free of all genetically modified products.

And what’s really fascinating is that both organics-loving progressives and liberty-loving conservatives are loudly speaking out against GMOs for all the same reasons!

Progressives, conservatives, libertarians… everybody wants to stop foods from being secretly formulated with deadly GMO

Think about it: What other issue has the widespread support of churches, environmentalists, health experts, food gurus, farmers and natural health consumers? Only the issue of GMO.

Our victory against the scourge of GMO is now inevitable. We have passed the tipping point of consumer awareness that Jeffrey Smith has long been advocating.

The “No on 37″ campaign can only resort to lies now. They can’t debate the facts on GMO. Their dishonest advertisements in California dare not even mention the term “genetic engineering!” They have desperately and pathetically turned to a campaign of obfuscation and confusion because they simply have no defense against a commonsense GMO labeling law.

GMOs should be labeled just like fats, sugars, proteins, calories and ingredients. It’s basic common sense… and everybody knows it.

High sales of GMO based entirely on ignorance

GMOs are an industry based entirely on ignorance. GMOs are the only product whose retail success is based entirely on the fact
that consumers had no idea they were buying them.

GMOs are the only products that people ACCIDENTALLY purchase!

    Think about it:

    • Nobody actively goes to the grocery store and seeks out foods with GMOs in them.
    • No food company declares “Now, made with GMO!” on the label of any product they make.
    • No grocery store advertises, “We sell GMO in our store!”

GMOs are only purchased accidentally by consumers. Nobody buys them on purpose. They buy them out of ignorance. And when that ignorance is transformed into knowledge, nobody wants to eat GMO!

Especially not when it’s killing the rats and giving them massive cancer tumors like the ones shown here:

Oh, and by the way, the top ten companies funneling money into the campaign to defeat Proposition 37, the GMO labeling law, are all pesticide manufacturers! Click here to see the list for yourself.

Awareness is the solution; Resistance is victory

Because GMOs only succeed through consumer ignorance, education is the most effective solution to stopping GMO. Once people become aware of the truth about genetically engineered ingredients, the scam is over. The deception comes to an abrupt end. The era of eating poison in your breakfast cereal collapses.

That’s why the single most important thing you can do right now to help defeat Monsanto and the GMO / biotech industry is spread the word about GMO. Tell everyone you know! And keep reminding them until they truly get it.

GMOs are poison! That’s why they kill rats and cause horrifying cancer tumors, infertility, organ damage and premature death. Those are scientific statements, not merely opinions or emotional reactions. This is really happening. There really is poison in the food.
Action items to help defeat GMO

If you’re looking for other things you can do to join in this victory against poisonous genetically engineered foods, here are some action items:

    • Visit the GMO article page on Natural News. This page is updated each time we publish a new article on GMO.
Join in the national phone bank to call CA registered voters and help educate them about GMOs and Proposition 37.
    • Share popular GMO videos such as A Rat’s Tale, What Is A GMO?, or even my recent children’s song and music video, Just Label It — a great song for kids, they love singing it!
    • Make a donation to the YES on 37 campaign in California.
    • Read up on GMOs at the Institute for Responsible Technology, GM Watch or the Organic Consumers Association.
    • Watch the highly informative Genetic Roulette Movie produced by Jeffrey Smith.
    • Most importantly, stop buying GMOs! This means stop buying all non-organic groceries containing corn, soy, canola or cottonseed oil.

Look for USDA Organic, because organic foods are not allowed to be made with GMO.

Share this article, too, because this message of ultimate victory needs to be heard across the industry. We need to stay on this issue and see it through, friends. We can win this!

Monsanto-funded 'No on 37' campaign fabricates FDA quote, engages in criminal misconduct

Friday, October 26, 2012 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The No on 37 campaign trying to prevent Californians from knowing whether or not the foods they eat contain genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) has sunk to a new moral and ethical low, having recently forged a quote from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in supposed opposition to the labeling law.

According to the California Right to Know campaign working towards mandatory GMO labeling in the Golden State, No on 37 deliberately fabricated a quote insinuating that the FDA opposes GMO labeling. The quote, which bears the official FDA logo, states:

"The US Food and Drug Administration says a labeling policy like Prop 37 would be 'inherently misleading.'"

The FDA never actually issued such a statement, of course, as the law prohibits the agency from taking an official position on the matter. But for its own malicious purposes, the No on 37 campaign decided to affix both the quote and the FDA seal on its campaign propaganda in an attempt to sway public opinion against the measure.

Since knowingly falsifying quotes and counterfeiting logos for campaign purposes directly violates Section 506 of the U.S. Criminal Code, Right to Know has notified the U.S Department of Justice (DOJ) via letter that No on 37 has flagrantly violated the law.

In the letter, Right to Know explains that No on 37 disseminated a direct mail piece containing the fraudulent quote, which was apparently parsed from an unrelated and out of context statement the FDA made more than 20 years ago. It adds that the mailer violates not only Section 506 but also Section 1017 of the U.S. Criminal Code.

You can read the full Right to Know letter to DOJ here: http://www.carighttoknow.org/deptofjustice

Beyond simply forging an FDA quote, the No on 37 campaign also apparently submitted a fraudulent "Rebuttal to Argument in Favor of Proposition 37" that was published in the official California voter guide.

According to Right to Know, a certain Dr. Henry I. Miller, who is identified solely as "Founding Director, Office of Biotechnology of the Food & Drug Administration" in the guide, does not actually work for the FDA in any capacity. Thus, his listing in the guide blatantly violates U.S. Criminal Code 912, which prohibits individuals from assuming or pretending to be federal employees.

None of this is surprising since the primary forces fueling the No on 37 campaign include Monsanto and various other biotechnology and chemical giants with a sordid history of lies and deceit. Even so, these companies and their front campaign still need to be held criminally responsible for violating the law in an attempt to illegally thwart an election.

Mike Adams still sounds optimistic in the article below, however I feel this is a HUGE setback for those fighting GMO products and wanting disclosure via mandatory food labeling

I can't believe this was defeated...then again, I imagine the vast majority of "Sleeple" don't even know what GMO is

Proposition 37 appears to have failed in California, but GMO labeling awareness achieves victory

    Mike Adams
    Natural News
    Nov 7, 2012

Proposition 37 appears to have failed at the ballot box in California, according to the California Secretary of State ballot measures results. The GMO labeling ballot measure, which would have required food companies to label the GM content of foods, was defeated with the use of over $45 million in fraudulent advertising and dirty tricks funded by Monsanto, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Kellogg, General Mills, DuPont, Bayer and other food and pesticide companies.

Over the last month, this cabal of deceptive companies has funneled money into a campaign of criminal fraud which, among other crimes, fabricated a fake FDA quote and sent out mailers that fraudulently used the FDA seal. A criminal complaint has already been filed with the FBI.

The “No on 37″ campaign also used fabricated front groups and impersonated a police organization (among others) to send out yet more fake mailers to voters, claiming that the police oppose GMO labeling. That fraudulent claim, of course, is entirely false.

Huge victory in terms of GMO awareness and grassroots support

The grassroots effort to pass Proposition 37 was supported by the efforts of millions of activists, plus financial donations from Mercola, Nature’s Path, Amy’s, Dr. Bronner and other companies. Natural News donated $10,000 to the effort and provided comprehensive editorial coverage of the grassroots effort. Click here to see a chart of who gave money to the effort.

And click here to see some of the “natural” brands that betrayed consumers with the “No on 37″ deception.

Those brands include Kashi, Silk, Cascadian Farm, Larabar and more.

In many ways, the YES on 37 campaign was a huge victory for awareness. The campaign organized over 10,000 volunteers in California alone and succeeded in achieving a massive social media presence.

The YES on 37 campaign also forced Monsanto and the biotech giants to spend $45 million to defeat the measure. That’s a record expenditure by the world’s largest toxic pesticide companies to try to prevent consumers from knowing what they’re buying. Remember: GMOs are the only products that consumers accidentally purchase without knowing what they’re buying.

What’s clear from all this is that GMO labeling has a foothold in the minds of American consumers, and this effort to label GMOs is going to be repeated state after state, year after year, until victory is achieved.

The biotech industry can no longer keep its dirty little secret: There’s poison in your food, folks, and the big food producers absolutely do not want you to know that you’re eating it.

The GMO labeling battle has only just begun

Monsanto and other companies appear to have won this showdown in California, but they are going to lose the war of deception against consumers. As awareness of GMOs continues to spread, people will demand honest labeling in increasing numbers.

The huge burst of awareness on Prop 37 has a lot of people asking the questions: Hey, what are GMOs? And why aren’t they labeled on foods?

That question will ultimately spell defeat for Monsanto, Kellogg, General Mills, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and all the other evil, deceptive corporations who bankrolled the “No in 37″ criminal fraud that deceived a majority of California voters.

I hope Mike is right Alpha. I don't feel as optimistic as he does though. It's like anything that gets shoved down our throats. There's a lot of talk and indignation from the people for awhile, and then the bad guy wins in the end anyway.

Again, nothing may be as it seems and the almighty $$ is the true "god" on this planet...

Was the ‘Yes on 37′ campaign undermined by its allies?

Before you decide I’m just making this stuff up, answer this question: do you really think food sellers like Whole Foods wanted to see hundreds, maybe thousands of their store products suddenly say “GENETICALLY ENGINEERED” on them?

    Are you kidding?

Well, that’s exactly what would have happened if YES ON 37 had won.

    With that prologue, let’s begin.

I’m not talking about the workers for the YES ON 37 campaign. There is no doubt the ground game was fought by honest people. But at the top level, a few “suits” relied on advice from professionals who told them there was only one way to win the vote:

Focus on the consumers’ right to know what was in their food.

That’s it. That was the biggest message.

    Why?

Because the other message would have exposed the natural foods industry. And that other message was:

GMOs are horrible. GMO food is destructive to health, to the soil, to farmers…and, by the way:

The natural foods industry, which is big business in California, sells tons and tons of GMO food.

It’s labeled “natural.” But in a huge number of cases, “natural” contains GMOs.

    Get it?

Without all that “natural” food ringing cash registers, big health-food sellers would go belly up.

If YES ON 37 had gone all in on a campaign to educate the people of California about the dangers of GMOs, this would have inevitably revealed that the “natural” food that people were already buying and eating was contaminated to the hilt with GMOs.

And that would have been bad for business.

There were many people at lower levels of the YES ON 37 campaign who wanted to educate the people of California about the dangers of GMO food. But they were rebuffed.

Face it, some big natural food sellers in America have accepted the presence of Monsanto and other GMO crocodiles as permanent fixtures in the landscape. These food sellers reason this way:

“We sell organic food, which is free from all but small traces of GMOs. That’s what we offer to those who don’t want GMOs. All our “natural” products? That’s GMO territory, and there is nothing we can do about it.”

In any election campaign, you go after the undecided vote. Everybody else has already made up their minds. In California, the undecided people were on the fence because they didn’t know why labeling GMO food was necessary. They needed to be taught.

But that wasn’t the major thrust of the YES ON 37 campaign.

People needed to know they should want labeling because eating GMO food is dangerous.

The people of CA didn’t get that message loud and clear. It wasn’t delivered with great energy and power.

And that helped the natural food industry. It helped them a lot.

They can continue to sell thousands of food products with “natural” labels on them, and consumers won’t know they’re eating GMOs, and consumers won’t know why that’s a very bad thing.

People who already understand the GMO issue and what Monsanto is doing to the planet assume millions of other people know, too. They see the YES ON 37 campaign as the first big wedge into other states and other campaigns.

They don’t realize how many Americans don’t have a clue about GMOs and Monsanto.

The big-shot suits from the YES ON 37 campaign better take a long hard look at the pollsters and advisers they’re using. When those pollsters tell them, again, in other states, to focus only on “the right to know what’s in your food,” they should stop and ask themselves:

Whose side are these pollsters really on?

And the non-organic “natural food” sellers? Whose side are they on?
