    A Free Word Processor

I recently started a college english class. When I used XP it came with a simple but stable word processor. Vista not so much. I've looked at so called free software but again not so much. I need a good quality program that costs nothing and doesn't come with 20 add-on programs like those stupid toolbars that take forever to uninstall. Any ideas?

I really need to understand Vista better. It comes with WordPad. Not fancy what so ever but will do for now. At least I can get started on the first modules in the course. But if anyone still knows of a great program out there I'd like to here about it.

Update: Found this page just a second ago. Anyone tried any of these?

I use Open Office as well, however I read somewhere that it is not supported anymore.

Maybe some of our more tech folks can chime in on the best free word processing program.

    Here's the scoop on openoffice...

    Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0
    OpenOffice.org - 144.77MB (Open Source)
    Description
    Technical
    Change Log
    Comments (27)

OpenOffice.org is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers.

    Great software

OpenOffice.org is the result of over twenty years' software engineering. Designed from the start as a single piece of software, it has a consistency other products cannot match. A completely open development process means that anyone can report bugs, request new features, or enhance the software.

    Easy to use

OpenOffice.org is easy to learn, and if you're already using another office software package, you'll take to OpenOffice.org straight away. Our world-wide native-language community means that OpenOffice.org is probably available and supported in your own language.

    ... And it's free

Best of all, OpenOffice.org can be downloaded and used entirely free of any licence fees. OpenOffice.org is released under the LGPL licence. This means you may use it for any purpose - domestic, commercial, educational, public administration.

Note: As of April 2011, commercial development of OpenOffice.org project has been terminated. The code was contributed to the Apache Software Foundation, where volunteers continue to develop it. LibreOffice, a fork of OpenOffice is now available for download here. http://www.filehippo.com/download_libreoffice

Thanks for so many replies. I tried Open Office. I ended up coming close to formatting. Installed it and my computer slowed right down and then froze. I've used Open Office before as well but with XP. Has there been any reported problems with Vista? While agreeing to everything I noticed that even after saying no to all the third party software it still wanted to install a toolbar. I don't want a toolbar. So I clicked on the back button and it froze. Then tried to close the windows it was definitely frozen. After a minute the window closed but nothing worked properly. Specially Firefox, what I downloaded Open Office with. I had to download System Mechanic to get back up and running. Dozens of errors were found. I decided to install Jarte. It's stable and guarantied no third party software or spyware. It isn't fancy but it serves my needs for now. I'm heading to filehippo to look at that.

Filehippo was given to me by my local server, as a safe site to download products. I can see why your machine froze. If you click on the back button when installing a new program, you confuse the heck out of your computer. It doesn't like that and freezes up.

I guess. I hadn't started installing at that point. I was still in the process of deciding whether to download. Thanks for the hippo site. I had completely forgotten about Spybot. Got it now.

Let me revise my first post about Open Office. I hadn't installed it yet. I downloaded the software and was in the process of agreeing on this and that part when I tried to back up to change an option. That's when it froze. It happened when it asked if I wanted a toolbar, an icon, task bar icon. Stuff like that. I said no to everything but just before clicking the install button I noticed on the left a list of what I was about to agree to. A toolbar was there along with Open Office. I thought WTF and tried to go back to see what I missed. FREEZE. They did something to the programing. I don't remember all this extra stuff the last time I downloaded Open Office.

It's ok though. the Jarte word processor works great. I've already completed two modules. Working on number three. I don't need all the added features in Open Office anyway. I'm doing Comp. 5 level English. No pictures or fancy colored text allowed.
