    Total Recorder Problems

I have had majors problems with Total Recorder, it seems to have a conflict with my Sound Blaster Live sound card. Any help would be appreciated. The error message I receive is MSGSVR32 in DRVTR95M.DRV. I have uninstalled T.R. and have to reinstalled S.B. Live as it has corrupted it.

I don't use it now, but before I upgraded my computer I used an SB Live sound card successfully with Total Recorder under Windows XP. It does have lot of setup options and may need some experimentation regarding enabling the TR driver for example. What version of Total Recorder are you using and what operating system and other details of your computer system? Oh, but you are saying now even with Total Recorder uninstalled there is a problem with the soundcard? Sounds like maybe TR didn't completely remove its driver? What are the symptoms in that case?

She has a missing DLL... completely uninstall the SB and reinstall... Make sure to unintall the software, then go into Device Manager and choose Uninstall on the actual sound card.. reboot and reinstall as if you just installed it.

I am running Windows ME BadBoy, think I will try the total uninstall of SB Live and see what happens. It is a bit upsetting, I like Total Recorder, do you know of any other program that is as good?

I do have Streamlink, but I like to record Art's weekly classic shows if I don't already have it, I record Laura Lee's interviews etc. and other archives from a few sites where you cannot DL directly. My SB Live has a recorder also, but it records as a wav file and takes about a gig and half to record a show, once you convert it to mp3 and delete the wav file it is a reasonable size.
I think I can also record on WinAmp, have to check it out. If you have a better suggestion let me know.

Anything that will overwrite or otherwise mess with your DLLs is not necessarily a good idea for a small program like that...

I've never had such a problem with Total Recorder and I've used it for several years and different versions with and without an SB Live soundcard. I haven't used Windows ME though, I have used it initially with Windows 98 and later Windows XP. Is this an older version of TR being used or a newer version? I see the current version on the website is v5.1, I myself am still using v4.4 though. It has a free trial restricted time demo and its $12 to register for the full regular version and $36 for the pro version.

TR as far as I know doesn't overwrite any DLLs, just adds its own. It does have an audio driver itself and appears as a separate psuedo audio card but it has a lot of configuration options to change that functionality as desired. It has a fairly unique feature of being able to intercept audio from souces that can't be recorded in some cases by other programs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and upgraded it many times with no problems, and no effect on my SBLive sound card. I've found TR one of the best such programs out there, not just for recording streams but scheduling recordings automatically and recording from an AM radio source and encoding to MP3 or WMA. A while back I saw one or to newer programs that appeared to be trying to emulate its functionality, but I didn't see any reason to change from looking at them. But there are some similar altrenative programs out there if you want to try them, I don't know anyone with direct experience with them however. There are a lot of programs for simple recording, but not all the features like scheduled recordings and real-time MP3 encoding that make it excellent for unattended recordings from internet or line-in sources.

It also has a feature that works well with Real Audio streams or files in that it can stream at several times normal speed. But I have also used programs like SDP-Downloader that can capture some type of streams without playing it - I use that with Dreamland WMA files but only works at 1x speed. I then use TR to convert the WMA file to MP3 for my MP3 player afterwards. Another downloader-only program that works for some files is NetTransport. But TR is useful for general audio editing and conversion tasks, of course there are many audio programs for that portion too. I personally just find it a nice tool that does everything I've needed instead of several other tools. Many folks have had success with it, I'm sorry to hear you have had such problems Aquarius - I've never heard of anyone with a similar problem before.

Here is the TR website, might have some more useful information:

If you already have winamp, why duplicate things...http://winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=143606

It is a decent tool TR, but I don't like all-in-one tools in general. They usually do things a little worse than separate tools can, and tend to be harder to troubleshoot.

Thank you Project and BadBoy for all the advice, I totally uninstalled my SB Live and reinstalled it with the exception of SBLive Recorder. Come to find out that was one of the conflicts plus Total Recorder driver overwrote the Windows Wave Device for Voice Modem as SBLive was corrupted. After I got done I bought the newest version of Total Recorder and installed it, I recorded some things and all is well, no errors or conflicts. New version is really cool, haven't checked out all the features as yet. Thanks again guys.
