Obviously if you are not root, you will need the user's password to switch to them.
Can I boot into knoppix as root by entering something before it loads, like I do with the "knoppix wheelmouse" command..or is that a script..got those confused too, heh? (are you sure you're up for this?) I never got to a pw request so I was doing something wrong...That means I need to find out what the root pw is for the knoppix I have as I didn't set any..

I was somehow under the impression that you had different permissions depending on what command shell you use too..see..lost..

    No worries dale...

Since knoppix is a liveCD, you cannot set the root passwd, it is read only on the CD... you can set it once you boot, but there is NO ROOT PASSWORD by default. All you do is type su and you will see the prompt changes to a root prompt.

Basically, all prompts are the same, you will always be using BASH (which is a shell language, don't worry about that), that is to say, there are no different command shells... If you hit CTRL-ALT-F1 at the graphical environment, you will swithc to a console with no grapihcs, this is the classic linux login... one login, one shell. From this you can do anything you could do in the graphical environment, you are always in the same shell, the bourne again shell (bash). It is like windows in that regard, when you type cmd, you get the command prompt... no different levels, no permissions, just access to a text console.

You can also use QTparted in the system section in your start menu, it is basically a PartitionMagic clone. You do not need to do root or anything, just launch it.

Thanks. That cleared that up. My next post will prolly be from knoppix.

I have Partition Magic 8 for XP. The last thing I tried was doing another quick zero-write with Seagate's disk utility (I have done a full ZW successfully but wanted to wipe anything off the MBR..and no, I don't really know why, heh. Seemed like a good thing - clean) then I used Partition Magic 8 to set it up ext3. That seems to be the newer, more compatible linux file system..I still think there is something done to the HD hardware itself to keep people like me from putting the HD out o their cable box into their 'puter..That or it's just trashed. But it seems to work. About all it won't do is a full chkdisk, a full Windows format - any file system, and of course store data without losing it. I wonder what file system was on it to begin with when it was a data disk for that cable box..? I'd try that one next it I knew..maybe?

Before I boot to Knoppix I'll look in Partition Magic for a HD info print out feature. They should have one too...OK - here's all that I could find in PartMagic that may help: That Seagate utility I mentioned earlier has a more extensive list of drive details but no print or save function that I know of. It's DRDOS..

I'm in Knoppix now..I forgot to mention that I also used Spinrite. It took over 12 hours but it was succesful too. The scan was, not the repair attempt. I'm going to try your su suggestion now..

And please delete those big images once you've seen them. Not much useful info there..

cr@p sorry, CTRL-ALT-F7 is usually the GUI... you can hold ctrl-alt and hit all the F keys till you find it.. those are all virtual terminals, where you can login as if it were the main login screen.

I just typed fdisk hdb5 and it said unable to open hba5..

How can I be sure i'm root? I'm just using the command window now but it say root on the titlebar and my cmd prompt is root@ttype0[knoppix]#

    Is that right for root?

Looked and this knoppix doesn't have QTParted in the System menu -- just Partition Image..

OK, I got fdisk to work left off dev/ before hdb5..got the following:
Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, Nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain n memory only, until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable.

The number of cylinders for this dis is set to 9727,
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with
    1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
    2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (eg DOS FDIXK, OS/2 FDISK)
Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)
    Then it lists the commands.

What command should I try next and can you cut-n-paste from X-terminal as root?
