    PETA's DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

Two PETA Employees Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges in N.C.

Two individuals from Hampton Roads, employees of the Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were arrested Wednesday night in Ahoskie, N.C., on animal cruelty charges.

The two were arrested after authorities allege they dumped dead dogs and cats in a dumpster at a shopping center on Memorial Drive in Ahoskie.

Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, were arrested at the shopping center. Police say they found 18 dead animals in the dumpster and 13 dead animals in the couple's van, which according to authorities, is registered to PETA. Both suspects were charged with 31 counts of animal cruelty and eight counts of illegal disposal of animals.

According to police, the animals were from two North Carolina animal shelters - one in Northampton County and the other in Bertie County.

Officials say the animals were alive when they left the shelters, but have not said how they died.

North Carolina officials say they have been investigating reports of dead animals at the shopping center for over a month. Authorities say there were four other incidents of dead animals found in the shopping center dumpster, each on a Wednesday night. Surveillance was conducted this week, resulting in the two arrests.

Cook and Hinkle were released on bond. They have a court date in Winton, N.C., on June 17th.

A PETA spokesperson told WAVY News 10 that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a long-standing relationship with shelters to euthanize pets that the shelters feel are no longer adoptable, and the spokesperson is confident the animal cruelty charges will be dropped.
If the animals were put into a dumpster as alleged, the spokesperson termed that 'outrageous.'

PETA says Hinkle has been suspended. Cook is still working for the organization.

What is wrong with these PETA people anyway? I am outraged! Euthanizing animals? Isn't this against everything they stand for? Do these people love animals or not? I have long suspected that PETA's stance on animals harbored resentment and fear of animals as opposed to humans. This article just reinforces this opinion.

I am totally irritated and outraged at this.

These are the people that say I am cruel for riding my horses, that horses weren't meant to be ridden and it is wrong.

Yet they would put that same horse down because nobody wants to take care of a large animal that virtually has no use if it is not ridden? this is their answer to non useful animals? We work hard here for horse rescue and to place abused animals in wonderful homes. And PETAs answer is to put them down?

I had a huge argument with a PETA individual about my cruelty in riding horses. I asked the person what they would do with all the horses that would become huge liabilities if they were not useful. The grasslands of the US and Canada cannot support the huge numbers of horses in domestic service at this point in time. Now I find out their solution is not to use the horses, but to kill them.

By the way did anybody ask the horse? My horses stand by the gate waiting for me to come along and play with them, including riding them. They love to be out on trail with me. They stand in a quarter acre paddock, with plenty of room to run and play by themselves, yet they can't wait for me to come onto the property and even whinny to me as I drive up.

Sorry I will get off my soapbox now.

SETIsLady I know you post on FF. Feel free to post this article over there.

I have seven cats and two dogs. All the cats would be dead if not for me and one dog would of spent the rest of his life in a basement. (sorry if i pat myself on the back here)
I have come across this mentality many times before.
It goes something like this "Aw the poor thing. Let's kill it!"

I applaud you Sean. I have gotten cats from the Humane Society myself.

But this is PETA. You know, how dare you kill a mink for it's coat PETA. Euthanizing animals because they are no longer useable? Acceptable? Wanted? or Needed? I am apalled.

Five of my cats were born wild and taken in by my wife and I. You will find pics of most of them in the animal lovers section. One i inherited from a neighbour who died(none of her family wanted her), and one of my Mom's cats. She had two but was only allowed to take one of them to the seniors residence.
My white dog, Tommy was the one living in a basement. Olivia, my black dog and sometime avatar i got from the SPCA as a puppy. She's a non registered pure bred Flat Coat Retriever.

I really didn't want all these cats but that's the way things happened. And the alternative, death, was not an option.

You have a good & generous heart, Sean; we need more Seans.

I suspect that PETA might have begun as an admirable & worthy effort = to bring to public attention the abuse & neglect of animals that certainly is too real a problem. But somehow they've become twisted into a ridiculous political, protesting, fund-raising, whacko terrorist group. With things like this news item coming to light, you'd think they'd at least lose their tax-exempt status if not their very existence.

Thanks Skookum. You know both Coletta and I have said if we were rich we would move out of town, buy an old farm and set up a no kill shelter where animals of all sorts could come and live out the rest of their lives in peace.
And Shecoda i see nothing wrong with riding your horses. I'm sure you treat them with love and they have great lives. Better than a dog food factory, for sure eh.

When I had the discussion, the first question I asked was what would you do with all the millions of horses that exist today? It was suggested to keep them as pets. It is very expensive to own horses here. Horses will cost about 75 dollars a month in feed. Less in other parts of the country, but still not cheap. There is board monthly, and trimming or shoeing every 6-8 weeks. The yearly inoculations by the vet, and some do these every 6 months, will run 75-100 a year per horse. This could be less elsewhere, but still expensive. Less if you have more horses. Not to talk about the unexpected vet bill. Add minor medical supplies not vet related and fly spray, winter blankets, etc and that is one expensive pet. Horses are expensive to keep unless they are used and worked.

I asked again and the person said they didn't know the answer to the huge amount of "Pets", but that it still was wrong to ride them. Now I know that it would be fine to euthanize the horse. And, well, while PETA is at it, they may as well sell the horse meat to Australia and Europe, to fund other PETA projects. After all they are euthanizing them anyway aren't they?

This is one of the sickest organizations on the planet of which I have ever heard.

Yea i know what you mean about the cost Shecoda. You noticed i started my post with "if we were rich".
i don't know about the U.S. but western Canada has lots of space. They might have to do like they are doing with a lot of feral cats now. Neuter them and set them free.
Killing them is never a good answer. Its just an easy answer.

There is not enough grassland in either of our countries if all the horses were to be set free. There isn't enough in this country for the existing wild horses. As it is we consistently cull our overbred wild mustang herds on a yearly basis.

But understand this is group of people that think we shouldn't even own domestic animals like dogs and cats. They think that all animals should be feral.

Oh! I didn't see the point you were trying to make. I didn't mean let all the horses run free, i meant there must be a better way to mange the wild ones. Like stopping them from breeding.

My dogs wouldn't last one week in the wild. They are spoiled creatures of comfort. And most of my cats i rescued were the sickly, runts of the litter. They would have died outside.

I have a sister that lives in the desert. Art thinks he is a cat magnet. Ha! He has nothing on her. She now is the proud owner of 15, yes that is 15 cats. They all find her. We think she has a sign on her property that only cats can read that says cat sucker lives here.

She spays and neuters all her cats, she works part time in a vet clinic.

These cats all have more or less chosen to live with her. My guess is that most of them tried living in the wild and couldn't make it.

I think she has a big S on her forehead.
