    Bigfoot expo shines light on hairy mystery

    Hundreds gather in Texas to discuss Sasquatch sightings

    JEFFERSON, Texas - Next to a lifelike replica of a giant ape head, the believers milled around tables Saturday covered with casts of large footprints, books about nature’s mysteries and T-shirts proclaiming “Bigfoot: Often Imitated, Never Invalidated.”

    While they can have a sense of humor about it, the search for the legendary Sasquatch is no joke for many of the nearly 400 people who came here to discuss the latest sightings and tracking techniques at the Texas Bigfoot Conference.

    “It’s not a matter of believing, like faith, when you believe in something you can’t see,” said Daryl G. Colyer, a Lorena businessman who has investigated hundreds of reported Bigfoot sightings in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

    “It’s a flesh-and-blood animal that just has not been discovered yet. And I think we’re getting closer and closer and closer,” Colyer said.

    Outlandish theories about the origin of Bigfoot abound, including that it might be an extraterrestrial. Many believe that a towering, ape-like creature descended from a prehistoric 9- to 10-foot-tall gorilla called a Gigantopithecus, and that it now inhabits North American forests.

    Hoaxes have been a large part of the making of the Bigfoot legend. California construction company owner Ray L. Wallace donned 16-inch wooden feet to create tracks in mud in 1958, and it led to a front-page story in a local paper that coined the term “Bigfoot.”

    But there have been more than 2,550 seemingly credible Bigfoot sightings reported in North America the past century, according to Christopher L. Murphy’s 2004 book “Meet the Sasquatch.”

    Murphy believes thousands more witnesses are too afraid of ridicule to come forward.

    “You see one of these things and it changes your whole perception of reality,” said Craig Woolheater, the office manager of a Dallas company who co-founded the Texas Bigfoot Research Center in 1999, five years after he said he saw a hairy creature walking along a remote Louisiana road.

    Colyer and others estimate that about 2,000 are in North America today, reclusive nocturnal animals living in thickly wooded areas with waterways, eating meat and plants and making nests out of trees and brush.

    Pictures and film footage are often disputed, such as the 1967 footage of a creature walking near a California creek. Most evidence centers on hundreds of casts of footprints collected since the 1950s.

    Jimmy Chilcutt, a retired fingerprint analysis expert for the Conroe Police Department, said many of the hundreds of prints he examined belonged to a primate, but not a human, ape, gorilla or chimpanzee.

    Like Chilcutt, other well-respected professionals have come forward to say such evidence should not be dismissed.

    “To me it’s still an open question, but here’s some evidence that warrants some serious consideration, so give it a chance,” said Jeff Meldrum, associate professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University who has studied more than 150 casts of footprints. “This is not a paranormal question; it’s a biological question.”

    Thanks for the link. I found another site with local bigfoot reports and while it also had several sightings, they were different. I wish the researchers would work together (pool their information) instead of trying to one-up each other.
    I only live a couple of hours from Jefferson but somehow miss the annual conference. Maybe this year...

    I'm new to the forum.

    I don't have much to say about Bigfoot, other than my mother and my uncle swore their whole lives that they had seen him up on Lookout Mountain when they were kids about 12. This would have put their sighting at about 1945 in Georgia, on the side of Lookout Mountain, a few miles from a little church there called Mt. Olive.
    They are both dead now, but everyone in the family - rather large, heard them discuss it.

    A younger uncle said he thought it was some man dressing up to scare the kids away from his still, but both mom and Ed denied it could have been a man. They ran accross it going to fish and that it ran away from them.

    I'd never heard of a sighting in the mountains of Georgia, but a year or two ago looked it up and there HAVE been several.

    Hello Hadriana and WELCOME!!

    I'm sure what your Mom and Dad saw was real. Many who see things considered "out of the norm" don't discuss them for fear of ridicule, especially in those days.

    I've heard a lot of about Look Out Mountain and how beautiful it is there. Love to see it one day, including Ruby Falls and the Cave/underground lake close by.

    FYI and just for the heck of it.....there is another Lookout Mountain. It is in Colorado, between Golden and Denver. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody is buried there since he passed on in 1917.

    Does anyone else remember the show George did where a caller (I think from NE Texas??????) said he was sure he had killed a Bigfoot, thinking it was a bear? But, he was afraid to take anyone back to the grave, because he was afraid he might have killed a man. I found him very believable and sort of felt sorry for him; he really was worried about what he had killed. I don't remember when this show was....

    WOW hadrianna, that's right around my neck of the woods! and alpha, if you're referring to the lost sea, it's AWESOME! when i was a kid, they had a special tour: if you could get ten people together, you could each pay ten bucks and they'd let you stay the night in the cave. i don't know if they still offer that. it's well worth your time. if you ever decide to come down this way, give me a holler and we'll hook up somewhere and have a beer.

    I remember that show well Delphine, however I don't remember where the caller was calling from....loner has a very good memory so I suspect he's bang on the $.

    It would be interesting if the same guy gets through to Art tonight, considering the topic tonight is Big Foot.

    I've seen some amazing pictures of your neck of the woods teresius...if you have some somewhere, please post them here and share them.

    I have relatives in North Carolina and the Nashville area in TN....I do hope to make it down to see it all one of these days...Look Out Mountain, Ruby Falls and the underground lake or sea

    I guess I should make this clear firs... I guess I should make this clear first I'm not claiming that its "Bigfoot or Sasquatch," I just don't know?

    My boy and I were heading out to cut some firewood. On the way over a ridge we could see something crossing the road on the next ridge probably about 400 yards away.

    I slowed down and told my boy to grab my camcorder from the back seat. By the time he had it going what ever we saw had already walked across the road behind a mound of rocks.

    What you see in the video is clearer then what I actually saw because we were so far away. The "creature" quickly disappeared into the woods and what we seen the video is the last we saw of it.

    We stopped and shouted, "who's there?" with no response. People ask why didn't we record the tracks but at the time it didn't seem important considering what ever made the track, i already captured on video.
