    LOUISIANA BIGFOOT

Northeast of New Orleans, near the Pearl River....

The Legend of BigFoot at Honey Island Swamp
    ************
Honey Island has become one of the most well-known swamps because of the real or imagined presence of a creature similar to what others have called Big Foot. Sometimes known as The Thing by area fishermen, Dr. Wagner, a local wetlands ecologist, simply calls it Wookie!

"I have an open mind about it. I don't say it does or doesn't exist. But there is certainly a remote and impenetrable area in this swamp, so if a creature exists, that is the place for it!" He recognizes that most of the stories are hearsay, but he talked to a commercial fisherman who claims to have seen Wookie firsthand. "He says it was about 7 feet tall and weighed 300 or 350 pounds, with long, orange-brown hair and big, wide-set eyes. Sounds like some kind of giant orangutan!" added Wagner.

It is reported that when the creature saw the fisherman, he gave a loud shriek and disappeared into the underbrush.

Although mystery abounds at Honey Island Swamp, those touring the swamp are more entranced by its natural beauty, and the sights and sounds of wildlife in this pristine wilderness. Dr. Wagner's now keenly-trained senses pick up evidence of wildlife along the way. He points to the dome of a beaver lodge; and identifies the silhouette of a bird in the distance as a "water turkey" distinguished by its turkeylike tail feathers. What looks like a floating stick near a cluster of cypress knees is really a diamondback water snake. "Don't worry," Wagner assures us. "It's patterned like the diamondback rattler, but the water snake isn't poisonous."

Wagner adds, "It can get kind of spooky, though, at night. Sometimes you don't know what you are hearing." Although the swamp abounds with birdcalls of great blue herons, white ibis, snowy egrets, and others; maybe some of those mysterious sounds are from Wookie!

"It could be," he admits. "Actually, I was fishing near a canebrake one night and I heard some footsteps. Whatever it was, it sounded big. I turned to see the cane spreading apart, so I got out of there! Maybe it was Wookie, but I sure didn't hang around to find out!"

    Help yourself! I'm outta here!

I live within an hour or so of Honey Island-this is the first time I've heard of this. There have been other sightings allegedly even closer to my home than that though (Sour Lake for one-my sister lives there.) I would be delighted if a creature such as Bigfoot existed-but I dread it ever being proven.

I suppose I have a cynical view of humanity. So far hunts for these types of phenomenon have been relatively limited as not a lot of people take it seriously. If proof, incontrovertible proof, ever surfaced...Cletus, Clem and all his cousins would be tromping through the Piney Woods of the Big Thicket (and everywhere else) to bag one. We'd prove they were real-and learn just enough about them to hunt down more...and more.

What's the statistic? A species goes extinct every few minutes, right? And Jurassic Park notwithstanding they don't come back. That would be a damn shame.

Nighthawk, you make an excellent point here, IMHO.

What is it about our species that makes us want to hunt down, taxidermy anything that moves and breaths...the more exotic the better?

Makes a good case in point of why creatures like sasquatch/bigfoot, ETI etc., provided they really do exist in this dimension, stay well out of sight to keep us trigger happy "humans" at bay.

And yes, it would be a damn shame!

    Again, Welcome to IW!!

    Thanks again, Alpha.

I wish there were some way to marry our species natural inquisitiveness to a sound moral framework. This would be a different kettle of fish if I didn't think any captured Bigfoot would be subjected to horrors beyond our imagining (and that's assuming we managed to not just gun one down.)

There are still "roadside zoos" in Texas-I thought THEY were extinct till I saw one on an outlying highway near San Antonio in 2005. And I can still remember when it was perfectly legal to exhibit human oddities in sideshows here-for all I know it still is. Can you imagine the roadside or carnival attraction that can claim a "?

The only good Bigfoot is a living one-hidden away where I can never find him. And I'd even be so bold as to argue the species (if it exists or if it doesn't) serves a useful function. It's easy to forget that the World is a wonderful place. We become so inundated with the mundane...war and death and misery. But somewhere, maybe, there are still things undreamed of in our philosophies.

    Hallelujah.

I couldn't agree with you more Nighthawk....very well said

Sadly yes, any live discovery would be a torturous one for the poor being. Greed, money would likely be the driver.

In the case of big foot and sasquatch, the only "good find" would be one of some skeletal or habitat remains.

I find it odd that there is no definitive evidence of this, anywhere on the planet despite the sighting. Perhaps these creature are interdimensional. The reported odour of the creatures is puzzling in that former scenario though

One would have to assume that they bury their dead-deeply-and that they live a nomadic lifestyle that allows them to conceal their presence. If most of their habits are oriented towards concealment there may not be a lot of evidence to find, and what is found may be misinterpreted or judged unconvincing or dismissed altogether. The conclusion which can be reached from that line of reasoning is that "they" are a lot more sophisticated than we might tend to think.

    And/or they have help.

I'm aware there are about a million stakes that can be driven into the heart of what I've written, and I'm ok with that.

    LOUISIANA BIGFOOT
    Searches by the
    Gulf Coast BigFoot Research Organization

I posted this during last night's show with Ian, but I thought I'd move it here, as the G.C.B.R.O. promises to post any findings.

These tracks were found by Bobby Hamilton in Northwest Louisiana while
investigating a report. There were deer tracks scattered in and around the prints. One of the cast shows a deer track in it. The footprints were 13.5 inches in length, 3.75 inches wide at the heel, and 6.25 inches at the ball of the foot and at the toes; 7.0 inches.

This area is under investigation at this time, and we cannot disclose any information pertaining to the exact location. There have been vocalizations heard in the area for many years and many sightings. The G.C.B.R.O. (Gulf Coast BigFoot Research Organization) has an excursion planned to the area in a few weeks. We will be setting up camp in a very dense area of bottom land where these animals have been seen and heard.

    Seen?

We have found many evidences of Bigfoot activity in the area. Broken over trees, bent trees, footprints, areas where they have been laying in planted fields of oats, and many other signs.

These bottoms are riddled with creeks, and there are stands of sugar cane where the tops of the plants have been broken off, and the tops nowhere to be found. We are sure this is a feeding area for these animals. We will be posting any new findings that we come across, and keep a photographic record also. We are bringing all our findings to the general public's attention, so that you (the general public) can see that our organization is in the field on a constant basis trying to solve this mystery.

This is their website. I intend to follow up on this one...

    Photo and Video of Bigfoot

There is a photo of Bigfoot's face (sort of) and a video (also sort of) of the critter on the Coast to Coast website. I couldn't get much out of it. See what you think:

1# Mask. You can see black spots where the eye holes are.
2# How did they get that close? Even Roger Patterson knew to shoot from a distance to make it more real.
    3# Creepy.
