    Windows Display Driver Stopped Responding

Recently I've been experiencing the following problem:

    • computer mouse freezes
    • fonts become super huge
    • then I get an error message that says " Windows Display Driver Stopped Responding - s3sav4
    • message states to re-boot computer
    • Microsoft offers no help to correct problem
    • when reboot is done, screen says windows has recovered from a serious error

Anyone know why this is happening and what to do about it?

I'm running XP...this PC is about 1 year old and my old one that fried was having the same problem before it died.

    Advice please?

You should find out what video card you have and install the newest drivers for it.

However, this is exactly the kind of message that sends me scrambling for my windows re-install disk...

Did you recently install software that may be at fault? Any sort of graphics stuff, any new hardware, etc?

OK ...only new hardware that I've toyed with is an external 80 GB HD.

    However this was happening before.

Software....well while I was away, my boys installed "Party Poker" on my PC..that's about it.

Here's what I'm getting from the Micro Soft Error Report:

Last time I had this type of thing happen, my entire HD was crashing and the guy I had to fix my PC told me I got it just in time...I lost a bunch of stuff, however most was still recoverable.

Sorry P....you know what a non tech/geek I am...what do I do? Is this serious?

    It's still happening folks...atleast once a day...what on earth do I do?

I don't want to loose all my stuff like I did before...and no, I haven't added any new audio/video software except for trying to load Total Recorder with a key that didn't work.

    Help please....

I`d try a restore point from before the problem started. Failing that, I`d go with Project`s suggestion to re-install the driver from the back-up CD. Keep us advised of the situation. You might need a new video card. Do you remember exactly what the problem was before when you lost all that data?

    Just a guess here

A lot of the older computers with the video "on-board" used S3 hardware. (I have two old computers that have the S3 built in) I'm guessing your video is built right into the motherboard of your computer. The one computer I have is around 8 years old and I installed a $50 nvidia card. It runs beautifully now. You might be able to pick up a decent ati or nvidia card cheap at a computer repair place. There is a little application called belarc advisor that you can get here >> http://www.belarc.com/ that can make an audit of your system, tells you exactly what your computer has inside. Makes it alot easier to help with trouble shooting.

The most helpful information for helping you with this is the information under the headings "System Model", "Main Circuit Board" and "Display".
