What program did you export from? How did you export?
In general, the best way to import into thunderbird is to have the email on the same machine... so if you exported from outlook express, on your home system, Import from Outlook Express your work emails. Once you see them in outlook express, shut that program down, open thunderbird and go to Tools>Import. Choose from Outlook Express. Done.
If you want to give me more details (export format you chose, originating program) I hope I can help more.
This may help, but it says what I said basically http://www.mozilla.org/support/thund.../faq#migration

1. I copied the files from Netscape to my hard drive
2. Next I copied them to my flash drive (1 GB) and brought it home to...
3. Install on my home hard drive and remove files from flash drive.
Thunderbird does not seem to have a menu for opening up and reading files from anywhere else other than through it's current mail system.
Would there be another mail program that could read what's there, including pictures?
'copied the files' - does this mean you used the export function? Or did you copy the files directly from the hard drive?
Either way, you should be able to either right-click the messages and say Open With->thunderbird or in thunderbird go to File->Open Saved Message (you may need to change the file type dropdown menu from Mail Files to All Files).
To import them all, you really should use the export function on work computer, then the import function in thunderbird.
