Washington D.C. (AHN) - Researchers have found that out-of-body experience (OBE) can be induced by creating a mismatch in a stream of sense perceptions of a person.
According to an article published in the Science Journal, two research teams used virtual reality goggles to manipulate the illusion of being in a different body.
A team lead by Dr. Olaf Blanke in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne made people wear the goggles while their images taken from the back were projected in front of them. Then the subjects were prodded by a stick simultaneously with the projection of prodding on to the images.
The subjects experienced momentarily that they were in the images whenever the proddings were synchronous. When Dr Blanke used mannequin in place of the images, the subject again experienced sense of drifting into mannequin.
Dr Henrik Ehrsson from University College London used a slightly different method. His subjects wore goggles connected to two video cameras fixed at six feet behind them so that they could see their own back in the projections.
He stroked the chest of the subjects with one stick while the second stick was moved under camera lenses to project their images being stroked. The subjects exhibited physiological response such as increased sweetening* when they felt their images were being hit.
Almost 10 percent of people experience OBE, most of them in face of extreme danger to their life, illness or due to drug effects.
The scientific explanation of OBE could help in remote surgery, scientists believe.
